Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

So you don’t like diversity

You work for a big company in the USA. If you don’t like the diversity drive you are going to be disappointed.

That’s stupid. We are talking about senior leadership. The line at Chick-fil-A is not representative of that.
Take a look at the board room meetings or senior leadership meetings. You will see hardly any non-whites. The few that are there are planted for window dressing because the company has been shamed into doing it.
Before you start shootings at me, my criticism is NOT of any particular race. My criticism is of the company and the old boy network that would like to maintain status quo while giving lip service to diversity.
I am not saying do away with meritocracy. All I am saying is give everyone a fair shot to make it to the top leadership levels.

I am really interested in this. I want someone on this forum to report back. When you are on campus today and in line at chick-fil count the number the number of women, bl---s, white males. I think you will be surprised at the makeup. The company is quite diverse.

@2pad+1bywP2Bl @dek here. Note that I acknowledged there is a diversity problem (for sure!).

Consider the words you wrote very carefully. Again causation and correlation are being confused. The company is a dumpster fire of its own making and has culture problems that results in a poor diversity in senior management (note the VP of investor relations is black and the VP of hr is female)

The technology companies you reference skew heavily male, white and asian and have tons of bad press about their diversity.
For example see the story on googles firing of Timnit Gebru after she campaigned for more diversity.
Margaret Mitchell: Google fires AI ethics founder https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-56135817

When someone says the management is not diverse only because they are white that oversimplifies the situation and that person calls him or herself out as racist. Trying to fight fire with gasoline is not an effective strategy.

: @2dek+1bywP2Bl - I believe there is causation and not just correlation. While XOM is all white at the top leadership level, companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM and others have so much diversity in the top leadership.
No wonder they perform well while XOM performance sucks.

@2cyi+1bywP2Bl 1- I’m sorry you felt that way and I hope your current work environment is more comfortable for you. I agree it is unfortunate that inclusion of different points of view after not solicited and considered in the company culture.

BUT. You and a lot of others posting here are very off point and are confusing correlation with causation.

2 - almost everyone not anointed for development by the hierarchy of their function gets ignored or marginalized by their management regardless of gender or ethnicity. It is because the culture of the company is relentlessly focused on pleasing the hierarchy rather than actually trying to effectively solve a problem. In my career this has always been bad but never as bad as it has become in the past 5-6 years

Most of the middle aged white guys you work with are being treated similarly (in some cases worse) but you and others have been too focused on yourselves so you have not seen how the environment around you is functioning. Don’t take the bait of the ‘woke’ narrative and let a pseudo liberal social media filter bubble close your mind to what’s happening outside of your “group”. These appeals to tribalism and cross group resentment will not serve you well in the long term.

Congratulations on getting out of a toxic environment (just not toxic for the reasons you think). Best wishes to you for a successful future.

I am a minority, I am a woman, and I left.

There is an "exit survey" I can fill in, and this is what I ranked as top 3 reasons I left:

  1. culture
  2. diversity
  3. (sorry I forgot)

I really think diversity is a serious problem. Often as the youngest, only Asian, and only women (half of the time all three checked), I often felt my suggestion was ignored and my voice was unheard. This feeling is very strong.

1 word, MERITOCRICITY; everything else should be just noise if we ever want to make the U.S. a world leader again.

Wonder how many other countries in the world play this game called D&I...the short answer is NONE. The reason is they know that cream (best player) rises to the top, not some half wit that went into a leadership/any role because of quotas.

If we are going to play the quota game, we should force the NBA to have diversity in the players....oh I see, you think the best player should play. As me dear old Pappy used to say "Different rules for different Fool$!

We have a D&I moment in our monthly safety meeting in Annandale, always an awkward 10 minutes. Such BS. 99% of the group knows it bologna....You have opportunities lots of minority’s, women, in management rolls in Annandale, and some doing a poor job. When the company allowed over 1.5 hour forum for LBGT during core hours , I couldn’t believe it. I’m waiting for Polish Pipe Fitters day! Let’s put those pictures in the Atrium, Corporations are forced into complying with this nonsense. LPS, LPO,OCVM, WebCat, no wonder we get nothing done. Get to work. Hey YL we having a picnic this year? See you on the walking path,

"Diversity" is an organized Company and cultural program to provide openly special privileges and opportunities to a few simply based on race, gender and claimed sexuality. That is racist, divisive and hampers the ability to optimize the business.

@rdn, it’s people like you who cause us to jump through all these hoops, meaning people who assume white, heteros-xual men are sexist/racist/homophobic. Most of us want to come to work, do our jobs, provide for our families, go home, repeat. The formalized I&D distraction, Pride flags, etc. take from what we should be doing, which is trying daily to produce quality products at the lowest, safest cost possible. Everyone needs to get over themselves and start acting like a professional, not a coddled brat who needs a safe space.

Diversity and Inclusion is completely unnecessary in the USA. This country is the most equal opportunity country on the planet with the most diverse population on the planet and the most laws and regulations to support D&I on the planet. To continue to cram D&I down our throats breeds resentment, sets false expectations, is virtue signaling, supports cancel culture and is a blatant lie. It is also not moral, particularly as it applies to the LGBTQ community, sorry but drag queens in grade schools and mastrabation lessons for first graders is just wrong as is transgender males competing in female completions, yet ExxonMobil supports these deviants the entire month of June. Personally, I could not give a damn if you are black, brown, white or green, have genitals or not, BUT keep it to yourself, AND we do not need a club for any of it. Just do your job and do it well and leave race, s-x, se-ual orientation, out of the HR system and everything else. Why people want to wear these things on their sleeves I do not understand? A person I was introduced to the other day told me she was African American, I said I was an American and she corrected me and said I was an Asian American. I was like what the he-l does that mean? I said white people do not come up to me and introduce themselves to me as Western European or Eastern European Americans? She said she was proud of her heritage. I asked her had she very been to Africa, she said no and that she was born in Africa. I told her that I immigrated from Vietnam as a young girl, but that I was an American now and that was that, and that I did not comprehend this notion that I should join a female club or refer to myself as an Asian American. You want to see racism and discrimination go live in a communist country like I did or a Muslim country especially in Africa, OMG. God Bless America, the greatest country on this planet. You have no idea how good you have it here. Just do your job and quit working the D&I program to get ahead, in my opinion it is disguised white collar armed robbery.

@fpg Cool story. Too bad nobody does it. Hence the need for specific diversity initiatives.

Maybe if white, heteros-xual men were a little less sexist/racist/homophobic in general, we wouldn’t all have to jump through all these stupid hoops all the time.

I just may scream if I get one more diversity email or a diversity lecture disguised as an employee meeting. I agree with the earlier comment about treating each other with respect and be done with it!

Do we have to keep being lectured about diversity and have "PRIDE" on each television for a month? Go-o-o-o-llee... give it a break XOM! So much forced diversity only breads resentment.

"Change"? How about we don't see color or orientation as a workplace metric? How about we respect and admire differences and strengths and show every one respect as many have been doing our whole lives without being told to give it cursory lip service. The Company Good Old Boys Club is a separate issue which needs to he eradicated fir more reasons than just diversity. Why is it mainly older white female SJWs who pound the Diversity drum hardest? Maybe showing respect to everyone is new concept for them.

Accepting diversity is the only way we all get something out of the system. The alternative is every group/sub-group at each other’s throats over scraps from the table, with nobody getting enough of anything. No reasonable person wants that.

@bkc You don’t have to like change, but you do have to accept it when it happens.
