Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Six months later

It's been six months (more or less) since the last major culling and I'm wondering how people who were affected at the time are doing. Do you know anybody who was cut at that time? Do you know if they were able to find new jobs by now? Or are they struggling? I was contemplating leaving, but I'm not sure how the job market for our industry is right now. Knowing that others were able to find jobs easily would be of great help.

How culled employees are faring in the job market is impossible to generalize. It depends on job function, compensation level, age (sadly), and many other things. For some people, getting laid off late in their careers forces them into retirement or leads them into underemployment (lower title, wages, responsibilities, etc.)

@OP+1bfSEcJ4. I would suggest looking elsewhere hard while you are employed with 3M. It's always easier and less stressful to find a new gig while you are employed.

From what I have seen most, but not all, of those let go have landed at new positions if they chose to.
Some doing much better than they were at 3M, lots moved basically laterally The job market is mostly good right now, so that has helped a ton.

With the new job titles, JG16 and JG17 are 'directors'. L3 (former directors) are Vice-Presidents. L2 (former VPs) are either Division President or Sr. Vice President.

It seems suddenly there are so many newly declared Directors within the company. Almost anyone in headquarters are directors now.

Most of the people I know were able to find other companies fairly easy. Job market is pretty decent. I had a few offers but some were lower than what I was making at 3M so I held out for something higher pay, and it worked out. Only had a gap of about 4 weeks which I covered with severance and some consulting work. So I'll earn more this year than any year at 3M. And HR said I am owed a pro-rated bonus in 2022 for Q1 2021 since I worked those 3 months until my last date. I might consider returning once the time limit expires (6 months from last date if you took severance) but only for a job grade 16 or Director position. I believe all 16s were turned into Directors. Otherwise I have a better deal where I am now.
