Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Guys, just leave

I spent 7+ years giving this company my all and being loyal through ups and downs in what was a bright spot in the darkness of IBM. Then, the winds of change started finally blowing in my BU 3Q2020. "Just another down, it'll be okay," I thought as I started surfing this board. Then the winds started blowing harder this 1Q. I started surfing here more often. This 2Q, it just seemed to be getting worse and I finally started applying. I started to have bi-weekly meetings about how my entire team's performance needed to improve as I registered for the new version of Best of IBM's recognition event for 2020. I started to really worry about my job. I started applying.

Just accepted an offer with a competitor for double the salary and potential earnings and I feel like I escaped a failed state. I already feel 100x less stressed. If you have the skills, then just leave. Your mental health will thank you for it and the greater compensation will just be the icing.

Ibm software sakes will shift and RedHat will be the new client executive team, specialist will be from an ibm perspective. IBM is trying to become Microsoft back in 1999 w a BP first model shift or what Salesforce has in place as the CE and companies like Mulesoft & Tableau are the specialist role.
IBM seems to be shifting away from Industry which would be another tug of war that someone changed in ‘16. Ibm hiring summit cheap labor, no experience, TQP plans, learn company from ground up then move into specialist role after 2 years in digital (joke)

Would/does AWS have use for say... a lifelong mainframer? In what capacity?

How exactly does one make that transition in a world fixated on "language x" and "product level n.nn.nnnn" and/or certifications.

Having looked at some of the AWS cert. materials out there... seems like AWS is all about knowing it's dashboard that wraps it's provisioning layer and knowing which products to connect together.

It's not programming as I think of it. More like a specific brand of Legos and rather like filling out online tax forms. Which is to say exceptionally boring.

Can confirm. Have read first-hand AWS posts saying the same thing.

In my region AWS is full of ex IBMers. I had an employee recently leave for AWS and she said it’s like a mini IBM complete with toxic politics and favoritism. I heard from former employees that GCP is similar with the number of ex IBMers that have been hired in some regions. I don’t want to go anywhere that there’s a critical mass of ex IBMers, that’s for certain.

Congratulations! I can also confirm that Amazon is hiring left and right. Reach out to those colleagues who already work there and get a referral.

@1syx+1bcvmPjl this is the same story in lot of teams.
They don't even replace people who leave, even in well funded z business and replacement is always someone with no experience because ibm isn't willing to pay market salary.

New products are all buggy because of this.

"I started to have bi-weekly meetings about how my entire team's performance needed to improve ..." So your team sucked, but instead you say IBM sucks?

It's the same as telling people to just leave the violent blue cities/states.
Things will only get worse, but some just refuse to move on.
Glutton for punishment

Nice! Good luck on your new job. I myself left 2 months ago to join AWS. Great move so far.

IBMers, AWS is hiring big time. We want you…
