Thread regarding IBM layoffs

experiencing a cult like culture

No diversity, not enough techies, too much micro management. Most in the team are managers, leads and non-technical. As one of the SME, I’m carrying a lot of the load but can’t complain because we are “family”. We often go through these team bonding activities to build a sense of loyalty and community. Hope to get out soon. :/

"management sees somebody else with some godlike advanced technology"

Most of the alleged "advanced technology" isn't really anything new or advanced at all. Just marketing spin on another code base...

2nm chips are a new advanced technology. Some CI/CD pipeline software, or Slack, et. al... not new or advanced at all, and sometimes actually worse than what came before.

Marketing games...

Isn't every business a bit of a cult?

IBM'ers... Google'ers... Amazon'ers, etc. Heck I have friends that worked at Wal*Mart and swore it was a cult.

People seem to either worship, or hate their method of survival, LOL!

What are you talking about? The board tanked the company because they were too afraid to fire a female CEO. It’s well known in the industry that IBM was the first big corporate to bow to the cult of wokeness even at the expense of destroying their business.

IBM has plenty of diversity. Maybe on your team it isn't but overall, they have an average mix.

IBM is governed just like a cargo cult - management sees somebody else with some godlike advanced technology and they come to believe if they act like those other people and recite buzzword-filled incantations, that the technology gods may come and visit them again.

The current CEO is an absolute TYRANT... what do you expect?

I agree with OP except for the diversity. IBM like most of America places diversity over ability. If we were truly colorblind and just picked the best people we would be much more successful.

Most failed cultures meet the same end - leadership sucks too much out of the citizens and there is nothing left to continue to prosper. IBM is no different.
