What is the recipe to get promotion here?

Hard work - check. Bring value - check. Learn fast and grow skills - check...
I would like to know how is it possible to get a promotion at SF, but I think I will leave this company sooner than I will be able to get a promotion. Here it seems impossible and does not depend much on the effort you put in and your engagement here.

When I did care I got no where. When I stopped caring I got promoted and a 5 rating. Most be something wrong with this picture. I'm honest when say this. Crazy because you would think it would be the other way around.

Who knows. It’s not even who you know anymore it’s random. Tech department it is probably skill based and what they need and is rare to find the right talent. Claims to get in. Easy now. They need people. Getting out of claims, forget it. It’s a black ho-e.

I've been part of promotional interviews & had interviews myself. First, be really good at your job (doesn't really help but will ki-l your chances if you're not). Second, use the STAR method when interviewing. If you don't know what it is, learn it. For most hiring personnel at SF this is an absolute MUST. Third, when you are interviewing, the LAST thing they are concerned about is how well you have done in the past. It is 100% ALL about how well you will fit with the "team". Show your personality and PRAY it fits well with the team you are wanting to get involved with. Fourth and THE MOST IMPORTANT has been said above. SF (like many other companies) is ALL ABOUT who you know, not what you know. I personally have had interviews for several different promotions and have had feedback three times (from people I know and trust & who trust me) that varied on the theme of I was the wrong gender or "we already had plans to promote X" but you were "very competitive"...

Moral: Network, network, network... Build a solid reputation with mgt several levels above your current position and you have a chance.

For the last year? Recipe for promotion is to be employed with another insurance carrier.

Two things are required for promotion: good interview skills, and be liked or know someone. Working hard, technical skills, how quickly you learn....these are not considered.

Theyll take that mo--n whos work everyone fixes if they are good at making up interesting STAR format answers in the interview than you with the provable results every time.

Ive never done so well in a job, both customer and boss feedback, and never seen a company care so little about that when it comes time to promote. Youll hear from a lot of SF vets that its better to leave SF then apply for CS externally than to apply from the CA role...which sucks because youll lose pension doing that now.

How much insurance Ed do you have? What steps have you taken after not getting promoted? Mentor? Taken on extra responsibilities?

Not worth it. Not a merit based organization.

It also helps if you are in any way related to someone already working for State Farm...I've seen people hired, promoted based simply on that.

It is much more based on sskissing than anything else. 9 out of 10 promotions have nothing to do w/ merit. But, the one smart person has to do all the real work. You won't get promoted if your'e a total bozo, but a half-ssed worker can get promoted before a smart person based on kissing up solely.
