Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) names Kathryn Mikells, a former executive with Diageo, United Airlines and Xerox, as its new Senior VP and CFO, effective Aug. 9.

Mikells most recently has held the CFO position at Diageo since 2015, where she also served on the board, after previously holding CFO jobs at Xerox, ADT, Nalco and United Airlines; at United, she also was VP of investor relations and treasurer.

The appointment comes as Senior VP Andrew Swiger announces his intention to retire effective Sept. 1 after more than 43 years at Exxon.

Exxon opens -2.7% as energy stocks plunge across the board alongside weak oil prices.

Maybe the 'outside hire' is to boost the KPI for the Inclusion & Diversity program. Just a thought.

I guess we’ll see what happens to those fudged numbers for reserves in the Permian and elsewhere.

@1nfo+1bUQXGPv Just google her name and every article talks about the reforms she’s brought to other businesses (Zero based budgeting, M&A, etc.). Also, the kind of person who moves around a lot doesn’t do so in order to “build”. Slash/burn/collect $$$$, move on to the next thing. It’s a very common feature of CFOs.

Also, what does industry have to do with anything? Most CFOs in modern companies treat dollars as exactly what they are: dollars. Whether they come from copy machines, beer, or selling airline tickets. I’m sorry that EM has led you to believe that prior experience managing a chemical plant is necessary to the CFO job and implementing cost cuts. I assure you it is not.

@1iqw Appreciate some links / articles / interviews to support your statements about cost cutting and internal changes.. she is undoubtedly very sharp but has no industry background . It seems more likely to me that she will be mostly external facing to shareholders and the press - filling in a glaring weakness. That would not leave a lot of time for internal tinkering.

Mikells has a reputation for cost cutting. She spearheaded the United/Continental merger (and layoffs), and did alot of divestment/acquisition in Diageo. Heavy focus on managing and improving the "portfolio" and brands. With heavy credentials in quantitative finance (Money), I expect a big focus on cost reduction and divestment then maybe an acquisition. Looks like a solid add to the management team. She understands pension math, so get ready for changes.

As if they listened to anything the HR VP TG had to say. She is a puppet to top and so would be the new CFO. Andy must be feeling relieved to jump the sinking ship with his golden parachutes.

United Airlines and its operations has been extremely miserable for decades, Fed had to bail them out each downturn. And UA has been known for mass layoff and musical chairs. So I guess, that will be the future of XOM!

They didn’t go outside just for a CFO…overpaid accountant. She’s our next CEO.

Those aholes will never listen to a woman.
Even less so if she comes from the outside and “doesn’t understand”.
Let the mansplaning begin.

Good, we need an outsider. Maybe she will convince the knuckleheads in charge that pi----g off your good employees and forcing them to the competition IS NOT SMART BUSINESS, and it sure as he-l ain’t how a #winning organization operates.

And there will be absolutely no impact on the running of the company and its direction. Even from outside, they recruit like-for-like
