I used to like working here but lately, the cooperative environment has been replaced with toxic competitiveness. People are going out of their way to make sure others don't move forward, even if that wouldn't affect them in any way. Bullying is not only tolerated but encouraged - or so it seems. What happened?

Sad to hear. I was very early Dev hire when RTP site founded. Incredible place to work.
When they sacked me circa 2015 it was interesting as
- - I considered the GPTW was getting fuzzy
- - New employes - and I think rightly - still found it better than almost anywhere else.
Overall IBM has better PTW - though far suckier than NTAP in pay, raises, promotions, bonuses. Take your pick.
Don't let the beer bashes or the "Happy go lucky" attitudes fool you. There are two events I would like to talk about. The first one was whenever the project managers were looking for a new candidate, I sat next to one of them. After the interview, they decided not to hire the person because the manager literally used a magic 8-ball to determine the fate of the individual. Another event is personal and I assume it may be a legal issue because I was doing my legal obligation to follow through with a task set by management and after the task was done, I was let go because something was not supposed to be touched and instead of looking at the documentation set by my manager requesting to remove the said object. Instead of taking responsibility, I was the scapegoat for a manager who I've only seen 3 times and who is usually never on site. Netapp sees its employees as a revolving door, it doesn't matter what you can do or have done for the company if they feel like they don't want to take the blame or feel like they don't need you for nonperformance reasons, they will let you go without a second thought.
I was shocked when I experienced it as a new hire, long story short 3 years on I got legal battles with them for these exact reasons and more! Netapp has no issues lying in courts I'll tell you that, not to mention influencing other lawyers and anyone involved in the legal dispute, they are like an orgenized crime corporation, and somehow they get the staff to comply with this madness.
You're kidding, right? It's had significant portions of toxicity, including most of the mid-to-senior management and TD's over the years. Glad I finally left that sh--e show. The grass is definitely greener outside. Storage is a commodity.
It's indeed sad to see good people leave and useless guys getting promoted.
Honestly, look at our entire society. It isn’t just NetApp. Just show up, do your job, if you don’t like it just leave - but I suspect you’ll find the same mess somewhere else.
Just don’t trust exec and prepare anytime to your next move. You’ll never know when
It will be your turn to serve as a adjustment variable for the decision they made, they rarely pay for it, instead they complain about poor execution and still get rewards. Let those animals to fight between themselves. Would you fight for a job that is boring you with this poisoning people ? Or is it well paid ?
A lot of people have left this calendar year because of that toxicity. Appearances are rewarded instead of content.
