Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

XOM has become a laughing stock

As recent as 3 years ago, XOM brand was so respected. When I mentioned to friends and acquaintances that I work for you XOM, I could see the look of respect.
Over the past year, that has changed to disrespect and ridicule. It keeps getting worse. I was at a party yesterday and people were making fun of the whole lobbyist fiasco and XOM’s response. These days I try to keep it low key that I work for XOM.
It gives a paycheck but not a company that I can be proud of.

I cannot agree more with @ugn+1bEY8UYc‘s comments, even if he is a troll. From being the World largest Company (in capitalisation), it has gone down, even among the oil industry players. Upstream (i.e. Oil price) is the real money earner for EM. The prove is when the recent oil price dropped to $30+ and the Company went into a tailspin to the current state and now that the oil price is back to $60+, the Company can now “ breathe”.

With the way the Company handled lay-offs, I worry if EM can become great again.

There was this joke that made me laugh every time I heard it.
I've forgotten it now.
So I'll probably laugh next time too.
Epileptic oyster - that's all I remember.
Really funny.
I mean.

If you could add two plus two, you might figure out that when the price of oil is high, many of the problems that mismanaged oil companies have are temporarily swept under the rug. Next time the price of oil drops again and EM has problems paying the dividend, I hope deep geniuses like you are getting their well deserved NSI.

@ugn+1bEY8UYc I dont know if you’re actually an employee or just a troll but a cursory look at any quarterly report will show the cash is absolutely flowing again (for now)

I don’t care about the “educated class” opinion, many of whom belong to ideological cults who love to hate the oil industry, but the opinion inside the oil industry is relevant. About eight years ago a vendor giving us a course was telling us that EM was the industry “golden standard”, except for a pipeline oil leak that just had happened, but likely was just an exception. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an exception but the beginning of a trend that took EM from the top to the bottom of the oil industry. It’s also going to get worse; the radical and catastrophic decisions that have been taken in the last year and a half will show their ugly consequences over the next 3-5 years, just like the oversized PIP. By then, the rot will be irreversible. In the past, whenever Exxon made huge mistakes, it payed its way out of it by throwing billions at it. No more billions left today.

The external level of respect amongst industry peers and the public alike has dropped dramatically. We have gone from being perceived as an industry and community leader to a laughingstock, and the way the company has treated so many longtime employees through the ill-disguised layoffs, while competitors offer transparency and better than fair financial packages to those displaced makes one wonder why anyone in their right mind would stay here, much less come to work here.

I was never ashamed to say where I worked. Folks knew of the great benefits I was receiving and would receive when retired. Especially knowing I never went to college.

  1. 5 years of ups and downs, but I made it.

We have poor executive management right now no doubt about it. In parts of the gulf coast region Exxon is still viewed as a "good" company to work for. Outside of there, I try to avoid talking about where I work.

I’ve always stayed lowkey about where I work but EM is still pretty widely respected as a good company outside. My spouse has worked at a series of companies large and small, and just like people, you don’t learn about the crazy parts until you get to know them
