Thread regarding Nationwide (Insurance and Financial Services) layoffs

Nobody is safe

I keep trying to explain to some of my coworkers that nobody is safe here and their years with the company are not the advantage they think they are, but there's no reasoning with some people. Some of our oldest and most experienced employees were laid off due to their higher pay in the last several rounds. It's clear that knowledge and know-how are no longer important when making decisions on who to let go of. Please keep that in mind and be prepared for every possible scenario. I worry for those who believe they are safe and have no contingencies.

Tenure, experience and higher pay makes you extremely vulnerable at Nationwide.

You are absolutely correct. In fact, years in place only serve to make you a layoff target at many companies. Even if you’ve moved up over time you can hardly count on job security as more managers become victims of reductions in force. I believe the phrase is “movable workforce.” What companies want is a pool of workers they can plug in and unplug at will. That’s what we are. Few companies anymore have a sense of loyalty to their staff. If you have loyalty to your company just know that this is strictly a one way street.
