Thread regarding Belk layoffs

Belk has an identity crisis

If Belk wants to become a thrift store, they should just say so. It's still a mix of a semi-upscale department store (with better handbags, cosmetics, shoes ect...) but the "one register" open and no floor help makes it closer to a Ross or TJ Maxx. It seems like Belk has an identity crisis all while trying to run the store attempting to pay new hires only $10 per hr.

"I mean, they think it's 1970. The come in the store to pay their "charge card" with a handwritten check for $20, instead of paying over the phone or online."

Before I left my store in 2020, we had a major cleanout to make more room for online order shipping. Among the items tossed out were old, metal charge plate validators-- those clunky machines that you slid the gizmo over the top of the plate to make a carbon paper receipt.

Now, when those were actually in use (stopped completely in/about 1979 in most locations), those were the good old days. Belk still closed completely on Sunday and at reasonable hours during the week.

exactly, but the customer has to know what they are in for. The majority of customers (atleast in the Alabama stores) are elderly women between 65 and 90 who think Belk is like it was back in 1970. They still ask for "gift wrap", the "customer service counter", they expect someone to "size them for shoes", they want their $15 sweater wrapped in tissue paper, I mean, they think it's 1970. The come in the store to pay their "charge card" with a handwritten check for $20, instead of paying over the phone or online. Belk to them is a step back in time, but with Sycamore taking over, they are forced to jump into 2021, and they hate it. That's the customers we have here, that's the cold, hard fact..
