Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP’s instead of Layoffs

I wouldn’t trust anything! IBM is also moving to more PIP’s with not- realistic 30 day time frames to achieve so the severance is NOT being paid…. Be careful. I got the largest Bonus on my team and still got a PIP with the other half of them ALL over 50 and 24 hours to return all property !!! So much for 21 years of dedicated successful service !

I have been warned about getting a PIP in near future but my manager will not tell me any details until next meeting with him. I asked about severance and health care and he said the policies change all the time and would only be inform at that meeting. I am afraid he will make me sign a PIP which I know is just to get rid of me. I really need the health care . I wanted to know if anyone knows what the current policies are now in January 2022. Is IBM still offering severance and health insurance for 3 months as I read in other posts or has this been eliminated?

I agree PIP is an alternate, and effective, headcount reduction tool. One can establish metrics impossible to achieve on the shortest timeline that would pass a sniff test.
there is also Warning Letter, for even shorter timeline.
If you need to buy some time, a lawyer can be a useful tool.

well notice all the training you have to do this year - only reason for it is if you don't complete it you will be pip'd. Its not as though the training is really relevant to your role. I love it how they make you do cr-p non related training, but refuse to give you the needed in depth technical training required to build MVS POC's etc

Is PIP a real thing? In 17 years I never knew anyone or had anyone on any of my teams get on a pip. In fact I nvr heard it until a few years ago.

What scares IBM is in-quarter sale loss and not key personnel. IBM executives expect to be gone (with their bonus) by the time impact of key personnel loss is felt. And they are usually right.

We are all at-will employees which means IBM can fire each of us whenever.

It also means you can quit with zero notice to IBM.

PIP's real purpose is to scare rest of the employees

What scares IBM is key personnel leaving with zero warning, therefore zero knowledge transfer.

Don't get fooled by PIP. We are all at-will employees which means IBM can fire each of us whenever. PIP's real purpose is to scare rest of the employees to work harder and, more important, without paying more ('feel lucky you still have your job'). PIP best practice is to immediately stop working for IBM and start looking for a new job outside IBM. For most, it turns out to be a gift - kick in the a-s to finally get that better job.

Ginni used PIPs on people who didn't have enough billable hours even though IBM didn't have enough billable hours to give to people.

She covered her own lack of ability to get clients by PIPing people.

Based on the responses of a few here, they've been RA'ed, fired by IBM, or legacy IBM personnel with no market value.

IBM is using the PIP program to manipulate the number of layoffs and reporting. Also, the post-IBM benefits are different in PIP program than RA'ed. It's sad to see a once-great IT corporation has fallen to a new level. Wait until the 3rd & 4th quarters of this year. You're going to see major dismissal of personnel.

Probably deserved it. Always two sides to a story. And everyone on a pip always says they never deserved it.

PIPs are based on performance, layoffs are irrespective of performance. If you're on a PIP you're not performing well.
