My manager of women shoes was so good at getting the dept. in order and sales up that she was training other managers in other locations to be more like her store/dept. she set the standard for women shoes and held a high standard to keep the dept. looking tip top and sales and credits in the top of the charts.. we ended up being The No 1 store for many years beating out NYC and California stores by following her strict plan of keeping everything in tip top shape.. The upper managers and loved her and praised her as she won awards and was regarded as the best of the best. she was then promoted to another location to do the same as she did at our stores. she also got that store numbers up and got the appearance up.. ( the former manager was fired ) she worked thru the covid shut downs doing online orders and keeping her stuff up to par.. she could do no wrong ! upper managers loved her and her job she was doing ! Then June came around and commission in shoes was Gone , runners dispensed to other locations and the shoe dept. seemed off.. they laid her off during the June 2020 cuts..
Moral of the store is she climbed to the top and did a outstanding job, hit all the numbers and credit scores and was the leader in shoes...only to be cut... do you see it yet? or you still got the macys glasses on? have you woke up yet? it doesnt matter who you are.. you are expendable ..

@5pyl You will eventually become open sell because the labor costs are drastically reduced and it will save Macy's a significant amount of money.
In my store in South Texas we are not open sells shoes, but I'm just wondering how come other stores are open sells shoes and we are not. There's no longer commission in ladies shoes. We are a Growth 50 store but also part of the pilot program. All these changes doesn't make sense.
Well not true about managers. It being laid off in June. We we’re cut one manager and she left in June. We knew in May but the effective date was June.
All you need in open sell shoes is a supervisor and a few part time employees. The quality of your shoes will go down as well. Be prepared to see some of your shoes at Walmart and Target. There is no sales involved. It's strictly unskilled task oriented work. I know. Back in the day when Sears was actually doing business and was relevant I ran one of the most profitable shoe departments in the whole Sears company. Unfortunately your highly competent and hard working manager was probably making too much money for open sell.
Yes, it does "add up" because stores lost management and associates during the June 2020 layoff. This short sighted company laid off people it desperately needed back as soon as they saw how the holiday season took off and we were left without the ability to staff stores properly. The people left behind kept a job but are holding the bag when it comes to workload and expectations.
Do new employees think Macy’s has a future for them?
At one time, the Ladies Shoes business was considered a signature business, ranking #2 behind Cosmetics/Fragrances. Traditionally, these were the highest paid sales managers in the stores, depending on tenure......she was making too much money.....now, with open sell, a new manager can be brought in, making 20K less.....

Since Macy’s doesn’t recognize seniority (unless you’re one of the very few union stores), recognize and appreciate experience, recognize and appreciate loyalty with years of service, recognize and appreciate dedication and hard work, recognize and appreciate good attendance, then what are they telling applicants and new employees (that they would rather have) about how they can work there to keep THEIR jobs or get a raise?
For those that gave negative reactions to my initial comment, don't hate the messenger, hate the system. I was stating facts which are not based on emotions. Just like I said, the manager was most likely let go (fired) not laid off, there is a big difference. Managers were not laid off after everyone started coming back from shutdown. They were either not brought back from furlough, if they were still on furlough at the time, and given a severance package, or they were let go and in some cases they were replaced. If they were replaced, most likely they were making more money than the person who replaced them. It's all about money and how Macy's makes money for their shareholders.
she was let go in June 2020 as she told me.. two weeks later the store manager was let go .. not sure if package was giving or not
Definitely agree. I was with Systems and Technology and we were downsized over 2 years ago. Me and several coworkers had great reviews but again they look at the salaries and where they can make cuts no matter how good you are. Most of the team in John’s Creek and Herald Square of course were not affected. Last year a bunch of Project Managers were let go and most were really good. This sounds terrible for her though you do all that work and achieve outstanding results just to get your walking papers. Great company!!!!
Not everyone was on furlough for months. She probably worked in fulfillment during April-June and was then let go. Terrible
"promoted to another location" most likely made the manager lose seniority, being new to that position in the new store. Every termination goes through legal first for approval.
Something doesn't add up in your story. How could she be laid off in June 2020 when they were reopening and slowly bringing those on furlough back? The only thing that could had happened was that she got fired, not laid off. Yes I agree, everyone is expandable as you say. She had moved up and was making more money, so she became an easy target to get rid of. Same thing happened to the manager at my store. After everyone was brought back, they got rid of him and brought in someone who is making way less than him.
I was an excellent sales person for over 20 years and was laid off. They kept employees who worked more years than me and employees who worked less years than me. Some were just as good and some were not. You are right, anyone can be let go at anytime. What was the criteria or method they used for choosing who to keep and who to let go.
This storyline is a example how this company treat there employees and it is true everyone is expendable. 📄🤨
