What is happening with the folks in Prague ? Seems that they are all leaving . Anybody have any idea ?

Been working with few clever young folks from their Procurement dept. Usually smarter than their supervisors they would leave for a better pay or to grow in their desired job role. Career planning is my view the weakest point there. Good folks are pushed to change role for the sake of it, not provided with tools and time to learn anything technical. Normally are replaced by younger colleagues coming from another department with apparently no clue what Purchasing is apart from the fact that joining Procurement is considered locally the big prize. Having said that, plenty of mistake were made too and I also agree with the poster that said that locally grown management is below par.

Listen to this, especially if you are one of those HR folks in US who needs to read this board to get the pulse of the situation :)

  • Business Lines decided to migrate several senior roles to the GBC by halving other affiliates such Belgium, France, Italy, Germany
  • Local management denies that there's a Prague problém in terms of supplying individuals for those positions

Reality:

  • attrition of experienced people at record high
  • people with CL higher enough to fill those positions are very scarse or not always fit for roles especially as many Sales roles are coming
  • more than an half of those positions will be filled by hiring from the street but tbh our offer is not attractive. Why someone with a senior sales roles profile and proficient German or French or Italian would today apply to work in the Prague GBC? Money? Uhm.. Career? Uhm...

I confirm that everyone who is not blind or a pathetic local manager is actively looking for another job at the moment. Hence the accelerated "promotions", shuffling tons of people around in new positions so to hold them off from resigning for a while with the illusion of getting that something here and now, no need to look for greener pastures. Basically no one is even inch close to retirement so what EM in Prague has to offer in perspective to folks with 20+ or 30+ years of work ahead? They all know the office will shrink progressively in favor of outsource or internal migrations to India. They will be fewer and fewer core positions linked to the Company's presence in the zone, being Europe, Africa and Middle East. But for our long? This won't be the core business of EM. Last but not least, if you wear a Mobil 1 t-shirt at work you would be (rightfully) seen as a mo--n or at best that you just ended your night shift at the gas station, the sense of belonging is nil in the GBC.

I can add:
+ Getting exciting new positions migrated, obviously with a 2 or 3 level of CL cut, no compensation and increased workload. Ehi but it's a great opportunity
+ aside from the Management talk the true chance to obtain a CL higher of 25 is very limited and will take you years. Then it's hard to understand why a college based in US starts from your same CL out of college (in the same or lower ranked job position)
+ 9 out of 10 locally brewed Managers have seen work life only in EM, they become almost unemployable elsewhere and during the pandemic become miserable and saddening to watch while they parrot the HR script written in US
+ Being told that we need to be cheaper as we are an "expensive GBC" , fuelling the Warm of the Poors against Buenos Aires (they are more Americanized) Bangkok , Budapest and obviously Bangalore
+ The idea of working with the outsourced customer service folks
+ The uselessness of our Expat Functional Leads. On a nice 3 years assignment way more sought after by their spouses vs Upstream locations. They are like aliens visiting Earth
+ The patronizing culture (empowering??) telling you how long you can work from home from abroad (55% of population is a foreigner) , telling you shall not have carry over vacations (just because it's an issue for Americans layoffs) and so forth

  • not difficult to find a comparable but better paying job, plenty of other corporations around.
  • workload increased significantly for many groups last year. No reward whatsoever.
  • all the extra benefits are gone
  • the social side of the GBC is dead, it used to a fun workplace
  • lots of people that are just starting out, so prospect of waiting for years till we get the perks back is not attractive
  • the promise of long term progress and career was broken last year. PIPs , salary freezes… same as everywhere else. And the supervisors are scrambling to “stay positive” and “motivate”.

Oh and should I mention how condescending and patronizing our colleagues from other offices treat us?

Same as most other GBCs, they can’t hang onto staff because they don’t adjust to the market fast enough, if at all

They arent leaving. They are power walking to be seen and heard! To move forward! Move ahead! Once they return from their power walk they will be working on their power point presentations about holding the hand rail! To stay safe!
