Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Can you think of a single good thing to say about XOM?

I was trying to think of something but every aspect of my job and the company overall are horrible at this point. From the everyday politics to the increasingly toxic work environment to disappearing benefits to horrible and incompetent management...I couldn't think of one good thing. Can you?

The ExxonMobil app works really well for buying gasoline, and that dividend is still funding vacations every quarter for me. When either or both go away, that's it.

Retiree here. ExxonMobil was once THE place to be; today, not so much. Yes, there were cr---y managers then and now but, there were also great leaders too; today not so many. Benefits were incredible; today, not so much. Will they restore the savings match? For your sake, I hope so. Will EM survive, it would be a tremendous loss if it didn’t. Personally, it was the best move for ME to know that it was time. Time for me to retire and focus on brighter, better things in life. Thanks to EM, I will be able to walk away and be better than OK. So, yes! I can say something positive. I can say, THANK YOU EXXONMOBIL! Best of luck to you.

I spent my career in Baytown in Chemicals Technology. Sure it had its problems but I would never describe the environment as toxic.

26 year T2 veteran here, all Chemicals. I can happily say I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy working with some of the smartest, empathic leaders and coworkers around. Life is tough (long hours, high workload) & business is tough (BOC conditions) in polymers but a genuine team spirit does exist up to VP level. Beyond that I am not so sure. It would appear that empathy stops being a desirable characteristic once you get to SVP.
I am empowered massively and have been given a pretty long leash to do what I and the team need to do so no complaints.
One thing I miss is a compelling purpose for our existence vs others, once we have a sense of purpose and vision, then maybe some of the younger folks would stop. We do do good for the world but do a s**** job of telling any one.

I love how much they care about my well being... like the time that they did a near loss observation on me cited "poor lighting" and ended up blaming me for the lighting.

I also love how they find creative ways to drive efficiencies! Like that time they took 8 people's jobs and turned them into 4 people's jobs, and then they took those 4 people and made them 2, and when EADS rolled around, supervisor got to claim improving costs by 75%, but they asked the 2 people what did you do beyond your job? LOL

I also loved having having a new manager every year. If you want to know why XOM is in the cr----r? This is IT. Someone with a year under their belt doesn't even know how to do their job, and their mistakes are not discovered and not retroactively applied to their careers. Want to be a high flyer at Exxon? Forget your job. Get 'in'. Take a new job every year. You can claim whatever you like on your performance. It won't ever come back on you that all your projects went to ground...

I also loved that all the Operators were treated like cr-p.

I loved stepping in oil from leaky equipment that management knew about while they blamed every slip accident on the employees. "Why did you step in oil? Couldn't you not walk in oil? So doing it right takes more time?" Glad I never got hurt, but do you really trust this corporation with your safety? The whole safety system is aimed at blaming rather than solving issues.

I loved working the DuPont schedule when even DuPont has abandoned it.

I love that I didn't have to sign a non-disclosure form when I left. Honestly on that one.

I like my group and job a lot!! The only negative is I'm not sure if I am going to get outsourced so I'm trying to get out preemptively. I'd stay if it was more secure.

The ramen place used to be good. Not sure if it’s open. I quit a couple months ago.

Power walking and asking people "how things are going" and asking if I can "help with anything" and getting paid for it is awsome! XOM is awesome!

Nice campus, good pay, and, believe it or not, I have a lot of close friends from work.

I work in plastics, and when Neil Chapman used to come to the sites for forums he said that ‘you can’t feed seven billion people without plastics,’ or something to that effect. I believe that’s still true, if you understand how our products are used and how long supply chains are. And by and large, our non-commodity plastics are top notch, cutting edge products that can replace a commodity resin with half weight.

It’s too bad management and our systems makes it as difficult as possible to run a plant. I keep wondering if it would be best for EMCC employees if we got spun out and merged with CP Chem or something.

Most people I’ve met are trying to do the right thing by their team and their colleagues.

I’ve never failed to get help when I asked politely and can only hope that others saw the same in me.

Everyone is trying to make it work through this. I know my leaders are trying their best but..

I met some very smart and good people here. I am also working on a site with great diversity and I enjoy that. there are still a couple positives but it’s getting where it’s not enough to stay.

The company from an employee standpoint is going downhill and has been for the past at least 10-15 years. So many benefits reduced.

Able to feed freeloaders? Or else they would have been unemployed long ago.
