They are actually saying Belk’s. It was called Belk’s from the start and changed around the 60’s I believe don’t know the exact time. Many old customers refer to it as Belk’s. So if they are older they are saying Belk’s not belts.
It's a dialect thing. Just like other word mincing:
Shrek = Ssreck
shrimps = Squinks (yes, it's a Southern thing)
chicken = chi'en
escalator = escuelater
asterisk = Axterix
disc = dist
flash drive = junk drive
i think you mean( between) however belts is used in south carolina mostly older customers use the name
