I have a little more than 5 years left until retirement and I just panic when people start saying that people before retirement are also very vulnerable. It would be a real disaster to get laid off at my age. I’m aware that Imperial doesn’t care at all about the lives of its most loyal employees, but I can’t do much about it because at this age it's not easy to get a new job. I tried in vain.

Well if you are 50+, you have pre–retirement status and will be able to get the pension at a favourable discount plus annuitant benefits.
If you have had a long career at IOL, you probably are well off enough to just spend your remaining worklife working at Amazon or Walmart just to ki–l time and earn some extra cash.
Get the goods on management.Make them Care to retain tou.Stop being a loyal chump.Think of yourself as a work in orocess and keep a portfolio of your accomplishments,skills,knowledge,awards,whatever,including +performance reviews.Start economizing now as the world economy is intentionally being derailed.Store food,water,meds,essential items.Dave and swap seeds.Grow your self–sufficiency skillset and network Now.Learn Ham radio,foraging,medicine,etc.Stop waiting for others to care and be a decent,helpful,but Aware person.
What else you can do? Id--ts are sending all work to India and hiring cheap employees there. Management don’t give sh-t if that’s work or not or the quality of work. They are only thinking about themselves and their own salary and bonuses. Currently, they don’t have any plan about Canadian workforce or any plan to retain them.Rather they will fire all high salaried employees within a year or two.
Govt. is not getting any employee taxes if all work is done outside of Canada. It’s one type of corruption. Unless govt. put some restriction to these larger companies especially Imperial, they won’t stop. Some countries especially middle eastern countries have restriction about outsourcing and engaging foreign workers. They kick out companies if 80% workforce are not from their own countries. Unfortunately, you can’t except this type of initiative from current useless corrupted federal govt.
