Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Walmart tech is trash

I am currently working for walmart tech as a lead for several projects. They've recently added a bunch of offshore resources to my projects and my life has become a lot worse. Everything is breaking and the business thinks that throwing more heads on a project will solve their issues with systems that cant even scale. My advice to anyone else in a similar situation would be leave the company asap, learn as much as you can and give your offshore resources the baby work so once youre gone, they wont know what to do.

After you leave walmart($hith*le), give it 1 year and find a job with another company.

Keep all that hate towards walmart inside of you and use it against them. Let it burn with a passion. Walmart is quick to sellout their associates. Amazon's old cto came from walmart so im just throwing that out there.

I can't believe I ever thought I could have a career 5+ years. It is little India now and my manager is purposely leaving my accomplishments off my eval and it seems like they are trying to push me out to bring in their Indian Buddies. I need out.

Yes, I remember Harvest, and most of us thought it was horrible. But, in retrospect, it was just a reorganization that failed – many of us have seen failed reorgs, so no big surprise there. But if you think back, the whole personality of the org changed when Rollin left and KAT stepped in. But, I think the thing that left the biggest impression on me was how managers, directors and execs that were supposed to be seasoned IT professionals just sat by and watched the whole thing happen. Many managers, directors and execs simply nodded their heads like lemmings. Of course, they teach you to go along, once a decision is made every one falls in line. So when absolutely terrible decisions were made, we all just fell in line. There were a few rebels that voiced concerns, but they were silenced pretty quickly. I personally knew a manager who was told directly by his Sr. Director to shut up and play ball or else he’d find himself on a PIP. He was already on a job search, and left shortly. The point is this, the company has changed. The personality of the company has changed. There’s no value given to experience, length of service, past sacrifices and doing what’s right. The Indian influence and practices have now permeated the organization at all levels to a point where it’s not just a bad place to work, it’s an active suck storm.

Having said all that, I am gone now. There are real IT shops that actually let managers manage and people have lives. There is respect and honor and loyalty. I still have friends at DGTC and most of them are just trying to hold on to get to retirement. They are gritting their teeth, trying to bear the unbearable.

For those that are still there, if you’re young, get the heck out. If you’re in Bentonville/Rogers, get out before the whole area turns into the Deli slums.

Walk away.

If you’re trying to wait it out because you’re older, I wish you luck. That’s certainly a tough road to go.

Harvest was implemented in 2011 under Rollin Ford. Things are so bad now that some of us actually miss that reorg. The GEC takeover was like a plague, but eventually settled down. Then Marc Lore was like the beast that rose from the pit. This new Seattle takeover is like we’re living in he–l.

My main beef though is they won’t invest back into the IT business by hiring enough FTEs as well as into systems. Even if they’d quit increasing dividends, they could invest back into IT appropriately.

With a few rare exceptions, I’ve not personally been impacted so I am sticking it out. But the senior talent drain has been horrific.

Oh and that “force ranked” stuff is from the pits of he–l.

Just my random thoughts.

I joined when Rollin was still in charge of ISD in 2007. Then Kat took over. Not sure when.

Can't remember the exact timing but we did Project Harvest somewhere around 2009 (maybe 2010?). Talk about a clusterphuck. Even before Harvest, my team brought in a couple of H1Bs to help share the workload. It wasn't too bad.

Harvest created a 'not my job' environment. The business partner couldn't get anything done any longer due to all the read tape. So they budgeted money for a 'shadow' ISD division.

Then not soon after Harvest destroyed all morale, management went to a burn and churn, aka forced rankings, aka the Hunger Games method for evaluations and promotions. It was Walmart's way of getting rid of long term associates making too much money.

Walmart bought Jet.com. I remember the preferential treatment which was rumored they got like alcohol on Fridays. The 'real' ISD associates weren't happy.

I still talk to friends at ISD trying to get to retirement. They tell me I wouldn't recognize the place anymore. It's become Little India.

Honestly, I’d like to say “I feel your pain”, but I don’t. Anyone that was at DGTC ten years ago knows how the sh*tshow at Walmart tech started. KAT. Once she came in and started bringing in all the offshore from India, it was downhill from there. Bringing in that cheap labor from India was just the start. Then, the influx of Indian developers, managers, directors and the follow on “Indian Buddy System” of hiring each other. Walmart tech has gone through a total sodomization thanks to the numerous spineless managers, directors and executives that sat by idly and simply let it happen. So now, the death spiral of American technology employment is well underway. It can’t be stopped because no one will stand up and say “Look what we’ve done here” and there’s no one of sufficient moral character to put an end to it.

I left Walmart and DGTC a few years ago and it was a wonderful decision. I no longer have to decide which developers I need to sc––w over at eval time. I no longer have to sit in endless meeting hearing the Indians say “Sure, we can do that”, and I can manage my developers with common sense and a level of compassion.

If you’re still at Walmart tech, just get out. Do it now. Your life will be better. Trust me.

Hahaha. I was at the Home Office for 10 years. At first I was in awe that Walmart 'chose' me. Drank the Kool–Aid for my first 2 years. I then opened my eyes and realized what a sh!tfest ISD was. Their philosophy was never time to do it right but always time to do it over. I've seen riots better organized than ISD.
