Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Young people what motivates you to stay at State Farm?

People in your 20s, why did you choose State Farm?

Outside of the toxicity we can all find posts about, what do you see in the future of insurance?

With the green deal, and promise of self driving cars to the middle class, recent talks of government handing out money to people who choose to ride bikes, vs commute in a car.

I see and hear a lot of people talk about the past and present, in reality insurance will be much less needed as the world moves towards taking away the human risk element.

Also too with the implementation of self driving cars, I really don’t see a future of the standard insurance company, especially with a lot more dems in office now, having control of the liability investigation resources to handle automation vs automation.

Which in return would bring back more american manufacturing and white collar jobs to the automotive business.

I’m one of those people that read everything productive about what’s going on in tech/society I have since started looking at other tech companies for employment. I personally don’t see retirement as a foreseeable outcome here.

@9iz what part of I’m only here for the benefits was hard to understand and I truthfully don’t care to hear what underpaid jobs are coming up next.

@9sp also I’m in a few deep state prediction groups on growth. Things like a Law degree, HR, will all be considered dead end Jobs here in 3-10 years. There’s really no complications that can arise from WFH, so it’s interesting to see even in this company what people are pushing for what. You may have been too cool to touch a claim, but in reality customer service is going nowhere with the stupidity of society, who knows maybe that money will one day trickle down to those who actually do the insurance work.

Not putting out sh---y homemade software full of tech debt.

Policyholder Center Platform ready to launch. Bright future for State Farm, it’s amazing how fast we are transitioning and growing rapidly. Some won’t be able to transition into the new model, but we need to trim expenses anyway so if you are a whinner or a rock head start packing your desk up and head down the road. I’m sure there are 10 people waiting for your job, especially after extended unemployment run out.

@9sp I wouldn’t worry too much also, we all know State Farm saw those survey results of who’d quit to WFH. Anyone smart, that has healthy balances doesn’t want to be in an office 8-12 hours a day even 1 day a week is too much.

Once these companies realize investing into self sufficient people will pay off, SF will have a lot of competition in the customer service WFH industry.

Otherwise invest into people that can’t maintain a marriage, can’t maintain healthy relationships, need others to thrive.

That record growth may not last long after people have their first claim experience.

@9sp I agree. I’ve caught on real quick you could be the smartest person in the room. The things that matter are who do you know, and can you say all the right things in an interview.

Gave it one try and it showed me enough that I really don’t care to put all my energy into promotions, work, and getting to know people who should be focused on retirement not working..... I can just freelance mooch the benefits and be just fine.

I feel bad it’s people like me that really blow the wages for others. I’m risky and gamble on a lot of investments usually pays off. You shouldn’t have to do that nearly everyday to stay ahead.

I’m well off whether I work here or not, otherwise I could write a novel about the stupidity, and unreal expectations I see a day.

Who knows maybe I’ll start a business one day and have a perfect way of to retain people worth a sh-t.

It’s pretty sad I see a lot of bright young intelligent people like myself stuck in the dead end somewhere. It’s almost like SF upper management feels entitled that these young people are willing to wait for seniority to buy their first house, and finally be paid a market value for their effort.

More young people have left in my area than anyone over 30. He-l the biggest issue is people just randomly quit no notice at all. We’ve had that happen twice on our team now. Says a lot when smart people can’t even wait to do a proper 2 weeks notice to start collecting money. Management plays it off like they are the d-mb ones lmao.

Like most people who accept a $35k/year job, something that I would have refused 25 years ago after graduating as that was low pay even back then.....people are at SF now because they dont have a choice, of the thousands of applications SF hired them.

They will leave the second a better job comes along, which isnt hard at $35k/yr especially considering you can make around that for 1/10th the work just about anywhere else.

SF isnt a career anymore, i feel bad for those who just got in before the pension ended, those people might be more stuck than others due to how rare a pension is.

IMO there are no careers anymore, the only goal of technology in the workplace is to replace as many humans as possible, and its going to get far worse as legacy boomers die off and their multi-line policies go away and are replaced with a broke millenial with a $5000 car who wants the cheapest insurance possible because they work for SF making 35k/yr

You can have all that high tech cr–p! At least I know how that food gets to that machine.

I’m op and I’m in tech myself, I’m already watching robots deliver food. I realize you probably live in the corporate area where things don’t happen fast in the corn fields.

I’m seeing handfuls more of Tesla’s day by day, it’s getting insane.

I agree it will take some time but don’t fool yourself. Head out west but don’t go to far man. I was blown away how different things are. If you’re into tech you need to be here.

I’m actually dying laughing right now saying things aren’t moving fast. Had a robot deliver my burrito!

I’m 28 and started SF almost 5 years ago. It’s obvious upper leadership is incompetent and sh–t hits the fan like clockwork every couple of years, but where else are you going to make over 60 grand a year in this economy? Especially when starting as a newbie at a different company.

I work close to this space in tech. Most of what has been posted so far are either conjectures or recycled talking points from 5 years ago. I am a technologist at SF and know quit a bit about these technologies.

A lot of these predictions were made 5–6 years ago before much was known how difficult the technology would be. We are a long long ways off from fully automated self driving cars. 2040s–2050s based on the latest up to date research before there will be more than a tiny tiny market share. Driving assist technologies? Absolutely, but all that tech in the car, just think what is now inside a bumper, is very expensive and actually increases the need for insurance. 5 years ago, I thought self driving cars would shrink SF by 40% by 2030, now that I’ve spent so much time in the research and code, I’m comfortable to say it won’t impact my career or really anyone currently at the company.

Lastly, all these comments about SF being a “dinasour company” or that Tesla etc will sell insurance really demonstrate almost everyone on this forum must be call center reps or claims handlers who know very little about the business of insurance:

SF is KI––––G it right now. Will grow about 1.1 million autos by the end of April. We are literally destroying everyone by Progressive.

Warren Buffett recently said insurance is the hardest business on earth to make money, and that it would be nearly impossible for car companies to be successful in the business. If you know much about it, you’d know he’s right. There’s a reason why Amazon has gotten into every business possible but insurance.

It doesn't matter because Insurtech is pouring tar in the pit you and your dinosaur company are currently in...

None of the prior responses have anything to do with the OP's original question.

It will happen sooner or later, but the first time SF said self–driving cars would basically take over the streets, more of them than people driving, was about 7+yrs ago, and they said it would happen in 10 yrs. So far, it is not happening.

Yea, right. I can’t get the manufacturer to stand behind a simple factory warranty. I guess they would have no problem handling complex claims. How many manufactures have declared bankruptcy.?

I agree,

Most insurance carriers how we know it will be like the poor mans choice. Basically like wanting the challenger but your pocket books says v6 charger.

Consumers would drop us in a heartbeat if Tesla insured their vehicles, I’m sure the consumer wave would start also of everyone financing and or buying one to avoid looking poor. It’d be also more mainstream if advanced manufactures not only manufactured, maintained, but also insured their cars, opening up more money to future investments and tech.

The word monopoly could get thrown around but no one has ever challenged that word while doing trips to Mars, and manufacturing electric vehicles. The future will be interesting for sure.

Feel free to grill me or say I’m wrong, I completely ripped insurance a new a–s so I know I’m deserving of one also. Otherwise I don’t see GMC,Ford, or Tesla allowing us access to industry secrets, and AI for investigations.
