Can anyone explain to me why it actually happened that employees have to choose between being available or losing full time? Was the previous system so dysfunctional?
I would like someone to objectively explain the real reasons to me.

Not necessarily. You can not work same hrs. New schedule coming out I have 21 hrs I’m full time didn’t except their terrible offer now getting no hrs. On the job hunt.
If you want to work mornings then you will still be able to work mornings, if you want to work afternoon or overnight you will still be able to work those shifts. What they are doing is making a time change, say from 1pm-10pm will change to 2pm to 11pm. A change but not a drastic change. Yes, it will inconvenience some people and you will have to make some adjustments but you will not be asked to work overnights if you work mornings now.
No it’s not fair. Someone who can only work days now is being asked to work nights after year with company. No other retailer says u are not available this day but I’m going to make you come in and work this shift even though you can’t. This has to be one of the stupidest things Walmart came up with. Hoping more people quit and they will be even more understaffed. They will be the next Kmart.
Because it’s fair this way even to the longterm associates who made the first cut. They have weekends closed. Here comes the next round.
Here is the fundamental reason for the switch. If you have people who fill out their avalability sheet and lets just say 10 people want thursday morinings off. Then you have a problem of not having enough people on a certain day at certain times. If you also have someone call out on that Thursday morning, now you don't have enough people to do the work. While in the past this was a small problem, in the past few years this has become more and more of a problem as people accumulate more PTO and PPTO and also states mandate certain minimum leave time which give the employees more time to call off, but also gives a big headache to the business for schdules.
You also run into the problem of people who work a in a certain department or who have a certain skill (paint mixing, running a fork lift etc.) all wanting the same day off or only wanting to work mornings so no one at night can do these things. Yes, you can train more people but that also takes time and someone who wants to learn. We have had times in our store where there was no one but the ASM who could run a fork lift or mix paint, or cut a key because they were covering the registers because three cashiers called out on the same day. No one on the shift I worked wanted to learn how to do any of these things because it would take away from the work they needed to do.
So we had a tuck full of mulch that could not be unloaded for over three hours, until the next shift came in because no one could run the fork lift.
So bottom line is this: It is much easier to have a few shifts per day that you can schedule enough people to cover all areas with a few extras to cover call outs, than to try and juggle multiple people wanting off on the same day on the same shift with different hours they can work.
@1rer I concur. Is everyone sick and tired of being bent over and ready to start a union? If you're already planning on leaving it won't hurt you. It'll help the new hires coming in and hopefully make the job a little better.
Call 1800 UNION walmart shrivels up like a vampire when union organizers come around hit them where it hurts
Got a few calls for an interview. If I get one of the jobs I really don’t even know if I should give two weeks or not?? They don’t deserve it. My store manger is awful and the front end coach is rude and crude disrespectful person.
The short story is walmart wants your life to revolve around it. Other words no life but at walmart.
Would you get unemployment if you applied? See they should have offered a severance really but they are to much of a c r a p place to do so.
There is a loophole! Tell your store you’re going to file for unemployment for the lost hours.
I told everyone this was coming! Nobody believed me except the states that are already doing it.
Yeah, I’m willing to give up my entire life for a part time job at Walmart with no guarantee of any hours or benefits and be available 24/7. 🤣
Welcome to the new world of retail. Part time employees, open availability, no benefits, no full time. It's reality. You're better off finding a new occupation.
Walmart knew what you CAN and CAN NOT work! You filled out a sheet that told them and they agreed to it. Now after 10 years of working that shift they are going to say no you have to work until 11:00pm or 12am if you don’t you lose your benefits. That is not right. Hire people that CAN work those shifts don’t s c r e w over long term employees who can’t work those hours. But that’s right Walmart can’t keep any new hires.
People when taking those jobs know what hours and days they will work. A teacher knows she will work Monday- Friday until x time. When applying at Walmart people filled out a sheet called an availability form that said I can work these days and until this time now if you worked until 5 and can’t work certain days they knew that. Now they want you to work those days you are not available and until 10 pm now that’s not right because they knew what you could work. No other retailer has ever done this where they force you to basically uproot and change your entire life. People got child care issues other jobs, kids to take care of etc etc. Walmart is the one who will lose they can’t keep people as it is and now are giving long time employees the shaft. Exactly what I’ve been doing since finding this out I’ve been applying for other jobs already gotten three calls back. Walmart isn’t the only employer out there. Hopefully they will be the next Kmart. Employees are sick of it there as well as customers.✌🏻
Literally every job, unless self employed, makes you work the hours THEY NEED YOU TO WORK!! Leave if you don't want the job. Go find that wonderful job that let's you pick when you work. Good luck with that by the way!!
"I’ve never seen a company give you a schedule and basically force you to take it."– You mean like every other job out there? Like people who work in offices who have to work office hours, or teachers who have to work during the school week, or maintenance workers, or construction workers or service workers anyone who has to be at work when the business is open.
Can teachers tell their employer that they want Mondays off? Can an office worker tell their boss they don't want to work on Thursdays? No. They work when the business is open or the company wants them to work. Most people work five days a week (mostly Mon.-Fri.) 40 hours a week.
Most jobs have a set schedule and you can take it or leave it. Very few jobs give you a choice of what days and hours you work. Be happy that you had that option for so long.
I think they just want people to leave the company and don’t want full time workers. I’ve never seen a company give you a schedule and basically force you to take it. Like people have different situations and that’s why you fill out an availability sheet. They give an offer that you are not even able for and expect you to take it. Then if you don’t well you will be punished and lose ft. So wrong what they are doing. Media should be made aware of what they are doing. Walmart is awful.
