Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Looks like one needs to say "yes" more often

Is that the only way here to get to promotion? As hard as I worked, I still haven’t gotten a promotion, and I know people who have been much less engaged and got it without a problem. What's the catch?
I can’t and don’t want to be a yes person, even if I never got one.

OP: The surest way to get a promotion and a raise in pay is to accept an offer at another company.

Indeed, "expectations" is a loose term that depends on who you are.

"Not about being a Yes person i have seen plenty of NO people get promoted": Kissed enough a-s to get by saying no.

"...your willingness to also go above and beyond not just meet the basic getting by.": Network and brag about what you do.

"You have to exceed expectations plenty of people that only do what everyone else does or less": It's competitive. Stand out by bragging and don't let anyone steal your thunder.

"You need to be a team player willing to work and exceed expectations, dont sit back and be like oh i cant im 9/80": Be nice, smile, and work weekends.

"No i dont want to work today, no i dont want to be a part of that project, no i dont want to help out, no i dont want to attend that meeting. You dont have to say Yes to evertything but you cant say no to everything either.": Don't take off work ever. Not for cancer, not death in the family. Always work. Think about yourself and being seen as a contributing worker at all times.

You have to promote yourself by doing a great job in your role and other assignments. Ask your boss to look for assignments that will help develop you and prepare you for the next level. A great boss will help you achieve your objectives. Also, don’t be afraid to make some mistakes as you venture outside of your box. And above all don’t get discouraged.

Not about being a Yes person i have seen plenty of NO people get promoted but it has a lot to do with your willingness to also go above and beyond not just meet the basic getting by. You have to exceed expectations plenty of people that only do what everyone else does or less and they expect promotions, How if the person next to you in the team works tail off and goes above and beyond

I was told in my review to get promoted I needed more people outside the business unit to know who I am. ???? Ok. Good to know the hard work counts for nothing. My neighbor says bad things all day about the company and everyone hates him. He got promoted!

How hard you work in only one factor in getting a promotion. You need to have the right competencies for the next grade level and the right behaviors.
