Dealing with supervisor

The biggest source of stress in this company for me is my supervisor. I don’t understand how Xerox even allows such personality types to be in such positions? Or maybe Xerox really wants people like that in supervisory positions?
This man is constantly frustrated, has a condescending attitude towards employees and to me personally looks like someone who really enjoys harassing people. Sometimes it seems to me that he prefers to release his frustrations rather than being really interested in the results of our work.

Xerox hired Dr. Jay, now at MasterCard. Not much more to say there other than senior leaders cannot differentiate a big ego from a successful and intelligent performer.

It's not just Xerox. We have the same types at Ricoh. One regional manager in a very high profile area has managed to survive for over 35 years. Runs his area like a kingdom with him at the top. Kisses bu-t of higher management, but people under him are trash. Won't hire managers if he thinks that they will be too kind to employees, expects managers to do work after 5 and won't hesitate to call you at home at 8 or 9 o'clock at night. Also discriminates against older job seekers, telling managers not to hire people because they are "too old". The few people over the years that actually complained to H.R. failed to realize that his office was basically right down the hall from H.R. so you can guess what happened to the accusers. They eventually disappeared. Upper management is blind or just doesn`t care.

My worst experience was with a manager they ended up moving when 8(!!) of us complained. They moved this person into a place that had direct contact with the team and the new manager that was on their cr-p list. The old manager found ways to target the team by convincing the new C suite of things that weren’t true. 3 Years later it got so bad I left. It had never happened to me before at X. At least the manager had a purpose. Showed me I had to move on. HR has been useless there for at least 11 yrs. don’t count on them to protect you.

In a 40 year career I either reported or was dotted line to 19 different managers.In terms of knowledge, people skills and caring for the job at hand , 2 were outstanding, 14 were average and 3 were absolutely beyond
terrible ..The terrible were totally full of them selves made terrible decisions and ran off a lot of good people.

Power and authority reveal the person. Want to know what someone is truly like? Put them in a position of authority. Their true nature will be revealed soon enough. If a person is humble, patient and compassionate, those characteristics will be magnified. If a person is a bully, is controlling, is condescending, is only interested in ordering others around, then those characteristics will be magnified also. Rare is the manager/supervisor who doesn't let his/her position fuel a personal power trip.

Accept it,if you work for Xerox you have no rights. HR exist to protect management and
management views employees as a headcount expense burden. The sooner management can contract out or outsource your job the better their cost cutting initiatives.

I had to threaten to quit to get away from my supervisor. He was a micro-manager who was an absolute nightmare to work for. He's still there to this day. I am not. Life is too short - either report the person, talk to HR or leave. Working for someone that awful really takes its toll on your mental health.

Send an anonymous letter (through regular mail) to the ethics people about his attitude towards employees...make sure you put the word "bullying" in your letter...guaranteed he will be called on it at the bare minimum. Worked for us and we got a new manager.

These types persist in any business because their direct reports enable it by not reporting this behavior. It's really that simple.
