IBM France announced today a voluntary redundancy plan for up to 1251 people. These redundancies will mostly consist of early retirement (for people less than 5 years away from retirement). There will be no resource action this year.

Pension plans only represent a small fraction of your pension in France and the one that IBM France provides is not managed by IBM anyways.
As soon as these people reach legal retirement age, IBM won't have to pay anything for them anymore.
Early retirement costs about 2/3 of what that employee costs. I fail to see how it can be worthwhile for IBM to pay people that much for doing nothing instead of spending a little more for actually working.
Except if IBM France has that many people producing close to zero useful work, but if this is the case, why wasn't the bloat taken care of earlier?
Step 1: Get rid of everyone with the old Pension plan.
Step 2: Get rid of the pension plan.
