Thread regarding IBM layoffs

What is the layoff process like at IBM?

At my old company the whole process was a nightmare. A two-minute scripted talk with my manager and an HR representative after which I was walked out by security like a common criminal. They didn't even give me a chance to pick up my staff (they said they would mail it to me which they never did.) To say it was humiliating would be an understatement. Is the process similar here or is it any more humane? Thanks in advance for answers.

One important part of the layoff process includes stocking up on IBM office supplies for your home office.

It is horrible and humiliating. IBM Human Resources tell you you are RA. You can stay in the company for one month, but you need to train the new hires!

Most of the replies are dealing with the US way of handling the RA. In the US, ex-IBM employees usually have a 30-day notice before their last day and when they part ways. That gives plenty of time to pack up any personal stuff still at the office, clean out the desk, and anything else you want to do other than work those last 30 days.

However, it is different in other countries and different if they think you will sabotage the company:

  • I have heard of an RA in INDIA where 300 people were invited to a mandatory meeting and told to bring their laptops. The meeting told them they were RAed, all laptops were collected at the doors on the way out, they were escorted to get their personal stuff and walked out the door.
  • During a RUSSIA RA, they did not walk people out the door right after telling them BUT locked them out of all IBM userids/resources/accounts before the early morning meeting when they were told they were RAed and what their last day was. There was one person RAed who wanted to finish something and we had to jump through hoops to give him access to that one system (AFTER a full backup was made of everything he would have access to).
  • The Australian RAs and Canadian RAs seem similar to the US ones.

It is great... you get a phone call from your manager who reads his/her script... then it is time to drop everything you do for either 30 or 90 days, depending on how they do the layoff, then you are completely done and start enjoying your severance.

In the pre-COVID days, part of the process involved dealing with all your soon-to-be ex-coworkers acting very sad when they see you along with frequent mentions of "let's have lunch"... LOL

"...Then you can come back as a contractor at dbl your old salary. "

Been my experience that I did better as a direct than as a contractor.

Have never made double my direct rate, as a contractor to IBM.

Apparently I'm in the wrong speciality, LOL!

Pretty sure it's 3 months severance pay and 1 month insurance.
Then you can come back as a contractor at dbl your old salary.
Once a contractor your manager cannot make you work over 40 hrs. lol

You're welcome

If you're a hard worker without connections you'll be laid off

Being a consultant, I make a practice of not having much, if any, personal effects at a work location.
So - when the "goons" suddenly come to escort you out, I generally have my few personal things already planted in my car or in my backpack.
Once, some dopey manager told me to leave my backpack (to be searched). I immediately took out my cell phone and dialed "9-1". I then asked id--t manager if he wanted me to dial the other "1" and we could have a police incident. Level heads prevailed and I walked out - my way, at my pace.

Don't rule out being called late in the evening to be told not to come back the next day.
And try to develop the discipline and resolve of "moving on". I've been terminated for no good reason a few times.
My attitude is "Sc--w them" as I move onto a new source of income. If you have the skillset, that new source of income should materialize soon.

Quite relaxing. Talk to my manager, talk to HR. Agreed on terms, last day I have brought equipment to the office, we had couple of beers after that and we parted our ways

In the US, most of the time you get either a 30/30 or a 30/90. Meaning, 30 day notice, then either 30 day or 90 severance on top of unused accumulated vacation.

At least nowadays with most people working from home, you don't get to get walked out in handcuffs between two security guards... if I get laid off, I will got take a c r a p while my manager reads out his script... and I will make sure I will tell him that!! Then, I will open a beer and enjoy it, I finally out of this S H I T company!
