Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Experience looking for a new job?

I haven't been able to find a new job for more than 4 months. However, maybe my age (near 45) is also a big problem, so I guess I won't be able to leave here for a while.

I only got to the interview phase twice and that discouraged me a bit. Given the number of applications submitted, I expected to be able to reach the interview stage many more times in these 4 months.

I truly think it would be to your advantage to stay at MRO stop complaining and thank the heavens twice a day. That you are have a job and I would assume a good life.

Be grateful to MRO for retaining you, work harder be more respectful to those around you and your professional life will improve.

I truly think it would be to your advantage to wait till you break 45, let everyone know and get your severance package. I realize that sounds risky but getting cut is a sure thing as you get closer to 50.

If you are only O&G skills than the options are limited. I would hold on, get a therapist/meds/divorce whatever, and wait till the bitter end. PIck up skills in things that are up and coming like programming/data analysis, p-t growing, real estate while you wait.

This has to be due to whatever your skill set is because the job market is hot in Houston and jobs are easy to find in other industries right now. Are your skills strictly dependent upon on OG?

If you are willing to relocate, whether in or out of Texas, you should easily find a job. If you are handcuffed to Houston then it might be more challenging. Austin and Dallas are hot job markets and frankly, I’ve found great openings in Atlanta, Nashville, Columbus, Indy and Charlotte/RDU, and even NYC, Chicago, Boston and LA are booming. Expand your horizons and broaden your search. If you do that and still can’t find a job, take a critical look at yourself and your approach.
