Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco is not as bad with layoffs

I think when you look at our industry and the numbers of layoffs, Cisco is not that bad. I'm not justifying layoffs - let me make that clear right now - I'm just saying that when it comes to job security, we're still not as bad as so many other companies. Which means that leaving Cisco for let's say Qualcomm would only land you in a worse position - more layoffs and less seniority. My point is, be careful not to jump from a bad to a worse situation if you are planning to leave.

I agree with original post. Cisco is very good with layoffs. In fact they are so good, this is their strategic strength. It is good for the stockholders like me.

Juniper doesn't pay for "best company to work for awards", and no one is surprised by Amazon's ruthless and unethical work culture. Amazon doesn't try to promote that it's a great place to work.

Cisco invests a great deal of money in projecting a moral culture.

@1sxp+1a5C1Tkx You think Cisco is the worst? You should experience working for Juniper! That’s Cisco on steroids when it comes to toxic culture and nepotism.

All the high-tech companies are for profit, so I don’t buy the capitalism issue. I’ve worked at several large companies, and Cisco is by far the worst-morale, liars, favoritism, and the layoffs are worse than anywhere. Every single quarter you worry about layoffs. It’s in their DNA. Cisco started out as a decent company, but now they have degraded to a pathetic layoff factory and complete morale destroyer. It’s the speed of the leader, and sh– trickles down, so there you go.

A good point by the original poster. The IT industry is pretty ruthless at laying people off. However, the real problem with Cisco is the hypocrsy. Whilst touting the "Best Place to Work" publically they're stabbing long term employees in back. All about the 5% of expensive resource they can every year and replace with lower paid staff who will just tick the correct box on the surveys whilst all the time the customer expereince gets worse. Cisco's on a slippy slope downwards.

Cisco is a morally corrupt corporation.

Cisco is headquartered in a country that is based on capitalism. Is it morally corrupt to make decisions on based on profits then?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Cisco's and other large corporations. I'm seeing a trend that I don't like. In my father's generation, once men started families, they only worked for one or two companies until they retired. Now, workers have to quit a job every 2-4 years to advance or get a pay raise and will work for 10's of companies between starting a family and retiring.

If you agree with capitalism, then continue to vote for Republicans and support their morally corrupt goals and agendas. Watch what happens as all corporations start laying off older workers to hire younger, cheaper workers in favor of short term profits. Quality will go down and problem resolution will increase which means increasing costs which will, in turn, decrease profits and companies will have to raise prices or continue to cut expensive workers in favor of cheaper ones.

As more and more older workers can't find jobs, and their unemployment benefits run out, they'll end up on welfare, which the Republicans want to cut. Older, unemployed workers will end up having to take social security retirement earlier than they planned, thereby bankrupting it sooner, leaving the younger generations no retirement, not that Social Security is much of a retirement check, but it's owed to us because we've paid into it our entire working lives.

Democrats, on the other hand, want to make sure everyone has health insurance, can get a college education without being in debt forever, and generally want to improve everyone's lives as a whole instead of just making the one-percenters richer and everyone else poorer.

Oh well, my rant is over and I expect this post to be removed within a few hours because it went political. Time to put my flame r—dant suit on and wait for the replies until it's removed.

... more layoffs and less seniority.

Like seniority protects anyone.at Cisco. That usually increases the size of the target on your back because they are targeting older, more expensive workers to replace with younger, cheaper workers with less experience.
