Heard some people who were deemed critical received a special, additional bonus or retention. Anyone else heard this? How were these individuals selected?

Did anyone in the San Antonio office get one?
After 25 years and the relationships you tout, I doubt a bonus was necessary to keep you from leaving the company. As other have said, it sounds more like a friends and family (member of the right church?) bonus than a retention bonus.
I don’t get the outrage here. I’ve been with the company over 25 years through several departments. Yes, I made close friends along the way, and given MPC is a major employer in the area, some of my family do work for the company (and yes some are senior level). I worked hard and built relationships that have paid off professionally financially for me. Guess what?, that’s how things work especially in this industry. If you don’t like it, go work somewhere else.

In my opinion they laid off many "critical employees", and kept the ones that had political favor and were renowned underperformers. That's why I agree with the comment "Yuck, just yuck" for sure. What will it take for this company to change?
There’s a difference between paying for performance and rewarding your family and friends. MPC had a long legacy of nepotism, old habits die hard.
If the below person is SO IMPORTANT at MPC, wonder how they have time to read this board on company time?
And this harms you, how? This sounds more like comparison and jealousy. If a company is willing to incentivize some people to prevent them from running to the door, and if that's any indication that employee benefits might serve the same purpose, that sounds like welcome news, even if you haven't received the envied incentive.

Yes, I hear many received a pretty lucrative extra incentive. My guess is most are in the friends and family club. For everyone else, I guess just be thankful you have a job...
Yes. Comparable process to the one that happened about 2 years ago.
Companies either do it during a merger or mass exodus of employees.
Sounds like the latter case here
Some things never change, my guess is these went to the friends and family of certain management.
