Moving stuff around

Someone’s post about moving stuff around without any elaborate and meaningful plan made me laugh. Pretty accurate description of what's going on here, I have a constant feeling that all we are doing is moving things around without any logic. Moving from one area to another, from one side to the other. Comical, but in fact very sad, because from that chaos it can already be seen that there is no future here.

Just got to read this thread about moving stuff around “ the official floor move” if you move it once you’ll move it 10 times. Example Garden State plaza for the past three weeks total mess on the 3rd floor. No rhyme or reason for the move must be so much time that the associates have on their hands that they can waste time and $ on floor moves and “pardon our appearance “ we are making it better for you the customer instead of giving the associates who do show up for work a pay raise.

It's interesting to consider that when department stores were at their peak, fixtures were generic and departments rarely moved. Then vendors started to dominate and establish "shops" for which they often financed the fixturing, mannequins, signing etc. Department store commentator, Peter Glen, warned about the danger of this practice as stores sacrificed their individuality and became more homogenous. We've seen this happen. Now, floor moves have become the 'new normal", a way of qualifying business decisions. There are times when it makes sense, but more often than not it speaks of desperation. It's a sad demise.

'So, what do you do for a living?'

'I lift things up and put them down.'

We move stuff so much, that just about every time we do, we have to clear an area, so there is a big empty space until the move is complete. This gives some of the customers the impression that we are closing. 😂

We had a regional visit a few weeks ago and are now moving everything back to where it was two years ago. Do customers care where merchandise is located? You bet they do, they hate where we move stuff around just so we can feel like we are making a business decision. What's the point, inventory levels are so low that the only thing we have in our stockrooms are fixtures and the crazy regional through a fit about how many we have in our walled off space. Been spending all of our time breaking up fixtures on the dock and filling our compactor which broke down because it wasn't designed to crush metal, now we have all of the trash building up on the dock. Floor moves make no sense when you don't even have enough stuff to fill the floor.

So true. You move one floor and than the next week they change their mind and move it back. They have a walk through and than you have to move it back to the original position. With no help from anyone . And others areas of the store has all the help.

Moving stuff around gives the illusion that you have new merchandise. Fools no seasoned shoppers!

Spring floor moves have done my store wonders. Everything looks Fresh and new, shops have moved from where they were for YEARS!!! My only complaint is I hoped my OVM was more hands on with fixture placement. She helps move fixtures for a bout 1hr then starts merchandising. While I visual captain complete the move of fixtures, wall scapes THEN with the little time I have left visual changes. Don’t get me wrong my OVM is a hard worker but she isn’t a team player on floor move days
