Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Most badly run?

I absolutely agree with someone who said that Oxy is one of the most if not the most badly run oil majors bar none. I worked in another oil major where the situation was similar in terms of management, but here it is certainly worse.
However, I do not know what even the best management could do here without radical changes.

Legacy OXY employees should hate OXY. Legacy APC employees should love OXY.

The company should hire and compensate employees only on the basis of experience and quality of work. Why do we have to defend our decisions if they are fair. Oxy is a fair and diverse company and we do not discriminate.

Sounds like someone desperately wants to be a manager. Oxy is definitely the place for you. We mint managers like pennies.

But until your greatness is recognized, keep managing your own business.

Dude. He/She said “manged” not “managed” Learn to read.

manged
a verb, it is the acted of getting so drunk you do severely dumb things, not neccessarily a black out, but usually

Dude, last night I got manged and I woke up in the hallway wearing some fat chick's bra as a hat and using the dog's pillow as a blanket.

If you have that arrogant attitude that you don’t need to be managed then you are either really inexperienced or you should not be part of an organization. If you want to be a consultant go for it. But even consultants need to be managed. Are you a millennial by any chance or just way out of your league.

This whole year has been screwed up because of the work from home. If you want total fairness then work from home must end now. You cannot manage what you cannot see and observe.

All people should be treated equally with regards to performance management related actions such as layoffs and firings. This is a problem that must be dealt with equitably.

Oxy runs a great risk of alienating their white work force. I have witnessed questionable hiring practices this past year where white men were passed over in the name of diversity. Of information such as this were to get to the news it would be bad for oxy. I encourage all employees to document any discrimination they witness.

Comment below on the woke stuff is going to come back and bite us all in the end. If being white is a problem people will just leave for another company. I have never met a racist person at Oxy whether white, black, green, blue, etc. To make all white people racist and start apologizing for it actually just breeds more racism in my mind. A company risk running off a large part of their workforce in the end. Now I have seen bad leaders and bad employees at Oxy, but to equate that with racism it would be hard to do.

Disagree that managers are better now. Too many that want to stick to the OXY ‘it’s how it’s always been done’ ways...others that live by the ‘the higher you get the less work you do’ mantra. Yes, you can delegate work but don’t be so lazy that you can’t answer simple questions about the work your direct reports are doing. No need to always promote from within...especially when the person has no experience or knowledge in that role and no desire to learn.

It is worrisome OXY is going for being “woke”. This Woke stuff with media, etc has gone way overboard. Now its white people being deemed racist for just being white themselves.

What was demotivating. Not enough correlation to performance?
If you ignore Oxy USA it has always been very diversified because of the international influence.

The managers are much better now than they were even 5 years ago. There is much more accountability for management. There is more support from the higher levels; whereas, during Chazen days they all hid away in LA. I'm not saying Oxy is perfect, but I think as a work place it's getting better. However, I do not support where we are going with the diversity stuff, seems forced and was already happening before this push. Oxy is already a diverse company. The way that the bonuses were done this year was complete garbage and was a terrible decision. It was demotivating.

As a starter, how about all the debt metrics - throw a dart because they’re all bad!! Oxy will never recover investment grade ratings - junk forever!

It is not so bad. Situation is actually getting better for the average employee. For example half of the millenials are gone on child bonding leave.

unfortunately its more than badly run financially - Its every aspect that's its failing in

Remember...
if you want a well run company financially, the board could install a banker CEO like Al Walker. Morals and morale (any left) go down the drain but company performance is better.

You are missing the point. By badly run they mean financially. This is the only thing that counts.

Oxy is so badly run that there never were any major layoffs since 2014. Oxy is so badly run that they allow work from home, I mean why should it be allowed? Oxy is so badly run that it allows leadership roles to people with different color, s-x, origins etc. I mean what do they bring to the table? Oxy is so badly run that it doesn’t run as per the wishes of any employee who have left the company. All other oil companies are run so differently that they won’t hurt a single employee.

Yeah, an organization can only go so long without a complete overhaul, unfortunately. It's funny because I thought things were getting better based on all the marketing of how "great" Oxy is to work at (now).
