Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Is the pay worth it?

How many wish they could find something better but have chosen to stay because they can’t find anything that pays comparable to what you are currently receiving? I’ve been looking for a while and have received numerous offers from other companies, some within retail and others in different industries. The ONLY thing keeping me from accepting is the rate of pay. I’m starting to wonder if the pay is low because those offers see that I currently work for Lowe’s...

i agree that a high stress tolerance is needed to succeed here. The big problem is that success here means $40k unless you're in management and even they don't make much commiserate to the stress level. Retail in general and Lowes in particular are poorly compensated jobs given the results expected. Without commissions there is no longer a path for relative financial success in retail and that's a big reason why quality customer service is quickly evaporation.

Lowe’s is a high stress/high anxiety level job in the stores, though to varying degrees based on the position. You need thick skin and a high stress tolerance level to adapt and be successful. If you don’t have those traits then I would strongly urge you to look elsewhere, even in retail.

Sadly as a result of the current pandemic (and resulting high unemployment rate) it is an employers market. My time at Lowe's has taught me that the pay raises hardly keep pace with inflation so where you start at is very critical. Many of my coworkers have to have second jobs just to get by. Most employees that I have known can only renegotiate when transferring between stores or to other positions within the company. Also the minimum wage can vary from state to state. In many states there has already been legislation passed to increase the state minimum wage above the federal $7.25/hour level. In the state that I live in (FL) the minimum wage will be raised to $10/hour by Sept 30, 2021 and by a $1/hour each year thereafter till reaching $15/hour in 2026. I realize there are two sides to the minimum wage debate but I think it a sad testament to this country that we can have full time workers that fall below the national poverty level while at the same time have corporate positions paying in the tens of millions.
