Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Might be a stupid question but?

I keep seeing people say leave before the ship sinks and obviously yes it would s— to be out of a job but with the way unemployment is set up right I was making way more on furlough that I am currently would it be so terrible to get fired vs. leaving and having no where to go or are you guys securing jobs first and then abandoning ship?

When everyone was furloughed the feds were giving out $600/week for unemployment claims. That number is now down to $400 and probably won’t get any better. I wouldn’t count on a future experience with unemployment being as rewarding as your last.

Do you want to control your own destiny or leave it up to your employer? It sounds like you rather your employer be in control. I understand where you are coming from in regards to collecting unemployment during this pandemic, but that won't last long. Many people are satisfied sitting at home collecting unemployment but not doing anything to better themselves. They are not driven and it seems they rather someone like the government take care of them. If you are ok with where you are right now and just waiting it out till the pandemic is under control, I can't blame you. I can't blame you for waiting to see if you get offered a severance package. But who knows what your employer may decide to do with you down the road. Why not be proactive, see what's out there, you don't have to accept any offers but you just might. If you get offers, make comparisons. Ask yourself, will you be happier? What drives you? what motivates you?
I myself need to follow this advice. I'm doing fine now, I like what I do, I just don't like the uncertainty.
Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
