Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

MORE REPORTS coming out on why BARNES & NOBLE is CLOSING

Barnes & Noble continues to struggle with declining traffic, an aging customer and boring or irrelevant design,”

Financial Health Rating (FHR) measures short-term resiliency and default risk using liquidity, leverage and earnings performance. An FHR below 40 is considered “high risk.” Industry-wide the FHR score was 58.52 for retailers in 2020.

Barnes and Noble has a FHR of 28.
Scoring worse than places like Gamestop and Macy's.

Employees are pretty vocal how they feel about their stores and managers and how badly they're being treated.
What are your managers telling you, if anything? What is the temperament?

I talked to someone who works for our mall and they told me some big companies are looking to take over larger spaces. One may be a fulfillment center, any ideas?

What city or state are you in?

My store is closing but BN is still denying it saying we signed a new lease. The city has literally announced that we are leaving and another is taking over. The new store has already been given a date for construction, in 2 weeks. I'm expecting "oh, btw we're closing tomorrow."

"Yeah, that sounds accurate. When you’re doing 3 people’s jobs, you’re also dealing with customers & the phones. Definitely stressful.".

Took me a year to decompress after I got laid off. I didn't realize how stressed I was.

So not worth it, especially for the low pay and the fact that they have no respect for your life outside of work.

"I think something is on the horizon, and they want to force folks out before."

They're trying to force them out, aka make them quit. That way they don't have to pay unemployment insurance on them.

I’ve noticed a real trend of treating long termers especially poorly, past few weeks.
And it’s not like we’re not busting our rumps trying to make up for limited staff.

I think something is on the horizon, and they want to force folks out before.

  • You’re all expendable, & we can’t wait to see you working at a fast food drive thru, or our nearby grocery store.

Just remember fast food & grocery store workers are considered ESSENTIAL workers.
Barnes & Noble? NOT ( they were sh– down for weeks)

Such a stressful job for so little money, and hardly any appreciation from management.

Yeah, that sounds accurate. When you’re doing 3 people’s jobs, you’re also dealing with customers & the phones. Definitely stressful.

You never hear positive feedback. Simple things like that go a long way with employees, but, instead, you’re treated as though you can’t be trusted at BN. The only time you get feedback is during a review & you’re lucky if you just meet standards. You could bust your azz at BN & never get a higher review than that.

No wonder employees hate BN. I should know. I worked there, & management is atrocious. They’re so carried away with themselves & the SM or ASM titles, that it’s laughable.

Remember, all of you SM’s & ASM’s. It’s only retail, not a high position in some really important service. You’re all expendable, & we can’t wait to see you working at a fast food drive thru, or our nearby grocery store. So, get off your high horses, cut your egos down a notch & stop with the awful treatment. Treat people well,& you may get more cooperation & respect. Duh.....kindergarten stuff.

Nothing lasts forever. BN will close and the remaining employees will be fired without warning. Might as well get out on your terms. Down with BN, Daunt, Riggio.
