Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Back to the office.

Why is the workforce not back to the office yet? Apparently there are other oil companies with significant numbers of people back. Is it because people at this company don’t really do anything anyway so whether they are at the office, at home, or not working at all the impact is the same?

Still think that for WFH you need to reapply for your position and compete with the marketplace for your job.

I am an older employee and I enjoy the fact I don't have to drive in to work, but that is just me. I think Oxy has done a great job of allowing us to work from home as I have many friends and relatives that get up and go to work every single day. It is that way at many companies, so I appreciate Oxy doing this for us. Oxy also made an early call on the weather this week and that was appreciated as well.

This last year has changed our society forever. The way we work, kids go to school, shop, etc. With that said I think some people are having a hard time with working from home for whatever reason, and those are the ones Oxy needs to have a workplace they can go to if they need it.

Teachers around the country have also WFH in many districts, and this has been hurting kids. So we need to look long and hard at 100% WFH before doing it. Some things like lower level school need to be in class. In my area our teachers have been back in class for a long time, and we are just blessed to have them. I could not imagine if we had teachers that refused to come to class.

All in all WFH works for some and not for others. So best thing to do would be a little of both, or rotate WFH within the group. There is a solution and I think Oxy has proven they are willing to work with their employees.

What do people have against face to face? Never mind the COVID-19 it seems like the less than 30 yo crowd do not even want to use the telephone. This is laziness.

@5ppq you’ve clearly never been on a video call with someone for an hour. You can get all the same social cues as sitting in a room with them. Hiring someone is always a risk. It takes months to figure out their real pros and cons and oil companies know that.

Face to face is a requirement when hiring employees. Employees come with a significant price tag once they are on the payroll. Contractors and vendors can be hired over a video call.
If you don’t care whether they are dysfunction social beings then go ahead and hire using a video chat.

Simple, you do it over Teams, etc. I am sure if you want to meet face to face you could setup a meeting to social distance.

How do they interview and hire new people without meeting them in person first?

@1pcv+19oB83oQ Not so sure that is right. There are many very good employees doing WFH, and we depend on those employees. I work with people all the time, and have been able to communicate with everyone as needed. In the office their is a lot of wasted time walking down the hall, floors, etc to see co-workers or get work done. If you need to see someone's face with WFH just turn on the camera. Most people have a picture so you can see their picture when you talk to them without having to go live, I think those that are doing their work should be able to work from home with no consequences to keeping a job.

@1pcv- Thanks so much for your staffing advice. We'll certainly give it the attention it deserves and get back to you ASAP.

10 seconds later...

After careful review, we've decided against your staffing recommendation. Best wishes on finding a position with any of the majors you referenced. Oh wait, you didn't actually reference any majors. My bad.

Op is a troll. Are there any stories or examples of work that needs to be done that’s not happening because of WFH?

Maybe people who still want work from home after COVID-19 should first have to give up their jobs and then compete to get them back. Why should the company still retain the work from home talent they are stuck with when they can really buy some great talent. Don’t laugh. There are some majors out there who would do this.

What a joke. Try inviting international dignitaries to a temporary office and see if that gets you a contract. Better yet why don’t you rent a bus and drive them around to your homes to meet the family and pets.

I think Oxy has figured it out with WFH. A lot of folks are doing a great job, and they can see that. I wish they could get rid of all the offices to save that money, and just rent offices as needed, or get much smaller offices regionally in case there needs to be people in the office. There are many ways this could be done.

Each company’s situation is different depending on the number of employees in a given locality or effectiveness of remote working. Maybe those other companies have a smaller number of employees in their offices or they have not been able to work effectively from home. OXY has done exceptionally well while WFH and a lot was accomplished in the past year.

OXY should give the boot to anyone who refuses to wear a mask or thinks COVID is some government hoax. These people are a threat to their neighbors and family.

The original question was; Why is there a difference in back to work timing between this company and the others in Houston?

OP, it's important to keep up with current events by checking the news more than once every two years. Otherwise, you miss out on major events like a pandemic.

We are doing very well and accomplishing much without being in the office. Lots of great teamwork and MS Teams meeting, OXY could save more money just close down most of Greenway and Woodlands since we do so well WFH. Saves alot of overhead costs.

OP, why do you care when office staff physically return to the office? The work is getting done remotely while we wait to be vaccinated some time this year.

Do you have a problem with the work getting done safely, or do you want people to die?
