Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

I have a much better picture of this place now

I've been at Allstate for 18 months. Here's what I learned about the company in that time. It provides little to no training but expects you to know everything right away, somehow. It's completely unorganized but expects nothing but perfection from you. We are forced to work using outdated systems but if you dare to bring that up you'll be quickly shut down by your manager. They don't care if you stay or leave so there are no incentive programs to talk about. Am I missing anything?

@1tyx+19jUUG3s...well said. I've been out of Allstate for a little over a year after being laid-off and I cannot believe the state this company is in. I was a part of Allstate when Sears was partners with them and it was so fabulous to work there. It was a family atmosphere. Managers cared and the big boss would eat lunch in the same cafeteria as the worker bees. Promotions came easy as well as great raises. Then 1995, they broke with Sears and it was the beginning of the end. Slowly the nuances would disappear. The picnics, the recognition lunches, the teams that were created to acknowledge a job well done. "Do more with less" began to seep into the everyday. I really feel for all of you with what you're going through. I hope it turns around at least somewhat, but that is a slim chance. Look to Geico or Liberty Mutual. Find something similar that you might like. A friend of mine had a decent job at Allstate but saw the forest for the trees and went to Liberty. He's very happy. I hope you all find your way out. It's become pure poison, unless you're the "well-liked" one or the "snitch" for the boss. Shame. Good luck to you all.

As a 30-year employee former leader I would have to agree with you 100%. The expectation is very high, almost impossible, held responsible for everyone's lack of work ethic on every level, rcl's making decisions based on little or no facts to promote those whom they like and performance documents that are weak and don't take leadership principles into account.

Shapiro shut down all incentive programs, unit lunches, parties, or the like a few years ago. That's when our benefits went in the toilet as well.

That was the start of Glen's purge of any joy or happiness working at Allstate.

Seems like his destruction plan is almost complete.

Yes, exactly. We get word we are to assume new duties and responsibilities and then told to refer to a job aid to guide us through new tasks. Luckily, there’s hardworking , dependable coworkers who we can ask to help us and guide us because the stress here is unbearable. Every day I get 2-3 angry customers or agents wondering why we haven’t inspected cars sitting for 2-4 weeks .

Checkpoints and year end PDS full of make believe commentary that the leaders think up for the next level to be astonished at. CYA at best, I came to realize after this company turned to the dark side advancement was saved for the "pets" and "nosers". If you ever talked about or brought up poor decision making, poor leadership, redundant process initiatives you were labeled and did not fit in with the others. Kiss the ring of your leader or else, no one would ever question stupidity from above. Leaders blindly follow in lockstep. The March lockdown put in place with no training, no help, no leadership to guide those of us that needed it. Then put many on UN and boot them out the door. What a poor way to run a large corporation. Sears and Roebuck anyone?.

Don’t forget no raises to speak of and even if you do get one it’s 2% and they “went to bat for you” because “ there’s only so much money we are allotted for raises”. Also getting your performance review until halfway through the following year

My experience exactly! I was promoted within months without any training for the first job and 30 days in to new position was sitting through accountability sessions. Poor Leadership was the reason I chose to resign. I’ve never worked for such a poorly run organization.

Whenever I think of Wilson, Shapiro, and Trudan trying to run this company all I can picture is Larry, Curly, and Moe trying to unclog a toilet.

That was surprisingly insightful for someone with such little tenure. Usually, it takes years for someone to become that disenfranchised at Allstate.

Please add to your list:

  • Don't attempt to talk to people two levels upstream.
  • It's hard to get an internal promotion, unless you are somebodies Niece or Nephew.
  • The least qualified people, based on actual results or business acumen, tend to excel at climbing the food chain. (I had a boss with no managerial experience, who got the role instead of a qualified internal candidate, solely because he was friends with the hiring manager at a previous carrier.)
  • Your Performance Rating is chalk full of subjective commentary/opinion from your boss. So, if you don't kiss the ring, you run the risk of getting poor demerits on your yearly review.
