Thread regarding CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield layoffs

February layoffs

More layoffs coming this month. All financial analysts in IT who support corporate initiatives were told last month, by none other than the Chief Hatchet Officer himself, DK, that their department is being eliminated. FAs can apply for a handful of open Finance positions but will probably just be shown the door later this month. CI budgets which total MANY millions of dollars will be managed by the new PMO. This will be a disaster! When will leadership ever learn that more layoffs don’t always result in a better performing company? You watch, the execs will then hire expensive consultants later in the year to suggest solutions on how to clean up the financial mess left behind.

SNL skits and jokes aside, this might be kinda funny if it weren't so sad and serious. We're talking about people's jobs and careers here.

The previous comment about a mass exodus of associates after incentives are paid out is a possibility. But the reality is that with a pandemic economy still in shambles, finding work outside of CareFirst might not happen even if you want to leave. Look at job web sites, where dozens and even hundreds of applicants compete for individual job postings due to high unemployment. CareFirst execs know this, they know associates won't jump ship when the job market is so tough. So they just continue to do re-orgs and layoffs and not give much thought about the adverse impacts to associates.

Sad but true.

Already done that....

CEO: not sure what is happening. We need to pay some people for their perspective. How about that strategic consulting firm?

McKinsey: sure, we can help, I mean, we did help usher in o—id abuse and sure we can help you. hand out that will be $4M.

CEO: let’s hire more consultants to tell us what that means.

———————

CIO: not sure what my organization should look like. No worries, I’ll hire Deloitte to tell me.

Deloitte: sure we’ll take your $3.5M and create a great plan.

CIO: this is awesome, thanks. I’ll cut some more jobs to pay for it.

  • 6 months later .... flushing changes made because ... well, it’s s—ed to begin with, BUT consultants.

Talk about a company that has seriously lost their way. It definitely wasn’t perfect, but it used to be a company that cared about its associates. I feel like we’ve all been lied to and the leadership of this company needs to be seriously called into question. In due time there will be a serious amount of turnover after incentives are paid out. So many see the writing on the wall. Good luck CareFirst you clearly lost your way. I wish the people I built relationships with over the years the best in the future.

Ha! You're probably right on hiring consultants. I can hear the conversation now....... BP&DK: "Duhhhhhh, how did this happen? What do we do?" PWC/Deloitte/other exorbitantly priced consultant: "We recommend you hire some financial analysts." BP&DK: "Oh, ok. Here's your bag of money."
