Charlotte roadway shop

I have an opportunity to transfer to Charlotte roadway shop, safe bet or stay where I’m at?

I have to second the comment about Charlotte Road shop likely closing soon. I’m not going to lie and say I have inside information, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see major locomotive shops closed so the system only has like 4 major shops left. If that’s the case, I almost guarantee a small Maintenance of way shop would be cut long before. I know people aren’t going to like it but in my opinion NS is heading towards barebones field workforce. A majority of maintenance will be outsourced to different companies like TTX, GE, Progress rail, etc and a lot of equipment will be sold and leased instead. It literally could be them ending up paying more to lease a locomotive that they just sold for next to nothing. It’s happened before; NS and logic don’t go together well.

Old game! Lay you off, move to new job or location, get laid off again, either quit or fall for another call back and move until you do quit.

Keep an eye on these lists being mailed out about transfers and relocations, there’s a reason why the lists keep growing bigger and bigger 😂

They sent me an email offering transfers to Transportation where they need conductors. I laughed. Not only do they offer a tiny relocation allowance, but why would you transfer into something that they want to eliminate 50% of the workforce?

NS is the only railroad that rebuilds their own track equipment and doesn’t buy new or contract the work out. Depending on your seniority and your current location’s future I would consider very carefully. I hope I’m wrong, but I would be surprised for the Charlotte Roadway Shop to last very much longer especially with all the heightened focus on cost cutting. There is a reason they are accepting transfers and it’s not because they are doing more work. It is because people are quitting because they know the writing is on the wall. There is a lot of equipment parked that is not being used from where the gangs were laid off. This equipment isn’t going to need rebuilding. It would do as a last resort, but I definitely wouldn’t try to plan your future around it.

Lol, two different occasions electricians took transfers to Birmingham only to be laid off again. One man was laid off within a month of transfer. You would be an id–t to follow the RR. There is better jobs out there just have to let this place go and forget about that retirement, it’s not worth it. You probably won’t see it anyways.

No place is safe, there is zero job security so don’t count on anything
