Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

We can't cut our way to profitability

Better customer service (which requires more not fewer employees working the floor,) better products, better prices... Those are the ways to improve profits. But somehow we ended up in a Catch-22 situation where they try to improve profits through cuts, that does nothing, profits fall further, they try to solve it by cutting more employees, that doesn't work... And it goes on and on. How hard is it to figure out that if your approach has not worked the first time, the chances are it will not work the fifteenth?

@not sure post. You are right on all points. I just think there is a mid ground...a combination of online and good help in the store that MIGHT bring it back. It would be nice but it is a new world now.

The company is trying to survive because EVERYTHING is going online. Unless it’s an everyday need item....you’ll have to get it online. At least there’s always a need for Coffee.

What BBB needs to do is “act more” like Target. Hiring an executive from TGT as CEO is a start. Now if I can see more Food and Health/Beauty products in my store (and expand our pet products ironically)...maybe it will keep people in here!

I’m sorry but quality quilts, Scented Candles, and Decorative Pillows won’t sell in-store sales! Shower Curtains, Pillows....maybe. But we need to focus on products that SELL again instead of overbuying on useless TV items from 5 years ago like the women’s razor!!

Not sure but I think that poster was making a joke that you put one two many digits in the year. As I am sure you realize Retail has changed a lot. There is a lot less interaction in stores. Many people have done research online so don't need a lot of guidance on selection. Not everyone but a lot. The pandemic changed things even more as interactions didn't happen. Labor is being cut more and more in stores. It saves a lot of money..though many end up with increased workloads..I am not sure if I like it but that's the direction retail is going.

All I was saying is at that time period atleast where I’m at things were pretty good in the store. Pretty busy and productive and I think that has everything to do with having enough people on the floor to give good customer service. Wasn’t trying to pinpoint a year specifically nor was I trying to solicit some kind of snarky argumentative response from anyone. Just trying to have an intelligent conversation about when stores were were doing well and what could be done to revive that. So instead why don’t we say early to mid 2000s....again at least in my area stores were doing well and for the most part customers were happy...not trying to fight with anyone.

What was 20013 like? 20013? I am glad you realize it is not 20013 as I think the rest of us realize it isn't either!

Why don’t they just go back to having enough people on the floor n helping and greeting every customer??? I realize it isn’t 20013 but things were pretty good back then...at least in my store...and several others that I know of and that’s what we did. Seems pretty simple what the customer wants. So why not give it to them??? May save things faster than what’s going on now.

Bottom line is....they’re too damn greedy. I’d love to sit and push a pencil all day and get paid

What is the point of this post? Do you have a MBA? Have you worked as a corporate leader. I know many think they have all the answers to turning BBBY around..there have been many posts on this. It's easy to think "why don't they do this?". " why don't they do that?" when you are in the midst of this..but you can't see or know how a huge corporation works unless you have education and experience. Not trying to sound mean..just stating the facts. If you feel so strongly have you written to corporate?
