We were told last night that cell phones are not to be brought out on the floor, leave them in your vehicle or locker. Anyone caught with a cell phone on the floor will be terminated. Has anyone else been told this? We had a shooting at our DC before, we used our cell phones to communicate. What the heck, is this legal, can they do this?

I have a question with Walmart cell phone policy at the warehouse. That is can you make a phone call, off the clock, walking in the warehouse out the door, because I did this yesterday and my boss told me it was a step 3 . Is it true that you can't make a call off the clock walking through the warehouse to your car
I never heard of this we use our phones all the time on the floor to find stuff for customers or the B.Y.O.D so it’s a lie
Don’t care what their policy is! I will have my phone on me during work at all times. You never know if their is an emergency at work or someone in your family. Doesn’t mean I will be on my phone have have it out my entire shift but my phone stays on me when working.
To add to my last post, what I was told to tell our associates in regards to emergencies was to have the family member contact hr and the message would be relayed to them. Of course, the cell phone policy was always difficult to enforce and its been relaxed since then. The main thing is I don't want your using your phone in front of the customer. If you step out of view to make a quick phone call, its not a big deal. In a DC, that wouldn't be an issue so I think the policy is a little extreme, but still legit. Just make sure you tell the Daycare to call your work phone number and ask to speak to you, they should page you.
Completely legal, you're on the clock so they can tell you not to use your phone. I've never worked for Walmart, but have been told I can't use my phone at my job. Although these were customer-facing jobs so purpose was not to look unprofessional. But yes, management can tell you what you can and cannot bring to your work location and I've been in the position where I had to enforce such rules.
I posted the question about the cell phones. If you have your cell phone in your pocket, not using it, not using ear pods, can management ask or make you empty your pockets? I need my job but if there is an emergency at Day Care, my children come before this job at Walmart.
Like others have said keep it in ur pocket and don’t look at it all the time. The stores are really bad with cell phone use. All the cashiers ( the one or two registers they have open) are always on their phones.
Keep phone on you during work. Keep in your pocket. Don’t check it while working. For safety reasons I would keep phone on you and don’t pull it out while on the floor.
Shotgun effect. How about holding the violators accountable. My phone stays on me but I don't check my phone or answer my phone all day long much less play on the darn thing. When management can lead by example then I consider leaving my phone in my locker.
@wpa And what happens if you have a family emergency? You trust the management at Walmart to pass the message on to you to let you know if a family member calls the DC needing you at the hospital 'now'?
The hard reality is that Walmart management would conveniently 'forget' to tell you until you complete your shift so that productivity does not lag. And when this scenario plays out, and it will, the cell phone ban will be rescinded.
I am not defending the associates that spend their entire shift on their phones. Yet, I wouldn't trust Walmart management to wipe my @$$ in the dark with a flashlight after the power went out.
Believe it or not people managed to do their jobs without cell phones this century. I predict banning them will boost productivity.
