Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Does one green job equal one fossil fuel job?

The green people are saying that over the next 10 -15 years green jobs will replace the fossil fuel jobs. They are missing the fact that a solar panel technician or wind turbine technician probably makes far less money than an offshore operations petroleum engineer. In terms of economic impact it is more like one petroleum job is equivalent to 4 green jobs. Not to say green is bad but don’t spin it that the jobs created equal jobs lost.

Since the poor education system and alternative facts rule the day, it's up to us in O&G to educate our neighbors about the science. The whole "Let em freeze" argument will never get us anywhere.

@1dbz- Solar and wind will always represent a tiny fraction of global energy mix because they don't scale well. Solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries require finite natural resources for their manufacture, and those finite resources are sourced primarily from countries who are openly hostile to the US. Also, these technologies wear out and must be replaced, so they're not really renewable. Additionally, the environmental damage caused by these technologies far outweigh their actual energy output.

In time, you and your ilk will realize these truths and reluctantly accept the apolitical reality of physics. Practical and scalable future energy will come primarily from nuclear power and natural gas. You should acquaint yourself with thermodynamics and economics to understand why.

I am not clear what you mean by "efficiency" of renewables vs HC..?
I understand that HCs are "dense" energy producing molecules, but in terms of economics, renewables – especially solar – is becoming more efficient every year. And with HCs there are several external costs which may not be fully accounted for: the USA has spent trillions of USDs, and many, many lives in defending HCs located in the Persian Gulf. – Those costs would tend to work against the economic efficiency of HCs.

Additionally, from the point of view of an electric utility, once they transition their generating plants to renewable, there is, I suspect very material cost savings in terms of not having to buy HCs from Exxon or Chevron or OXY. The sun "delivers" the raw product for free. And while the sun doesn't shine every day, those solar batteries allow for ever more efficient storage of the sun's free energy.

Then too, solar collection sites (or panels, on one's house) don't require 24/7 staffing at an HC-fueled generating plant, and I suspect the risk of a "mishap" at a solar collection site is near zero. That's not the case with HC generating plants. And of course, transmission of HCs – whether by pipe or rail – also periodically results in leaks, spills etc., and pipes and railcars do require eventual repair/replacement...

When you had in the external costs, is HC really more efficient?

There is no such thing as a "green job." Research the dirty little secrets behind the alternative energy associated with these jobs. Enjoy your E&P career for as long as possible knowing every year you can stay is financially equivalent to 3-5 years of doing anything else.

I’m not trying to be sarcastic, but “Not to say green is bad” leaves out that most green energy is extremely inefficient, while combustion of HCs is much much more efficient. Of course the US Fed Gov can force trillions into green energy and trillions more debt,?meanwhile other countries are not held to the same standards will surpass us, as our criminal politicians sell us out to China! We just need to pray hard and often now.

Sadly, they don’t care if your income is the same. The current administration hates successful people who make good money. They want you living hand to mouth, so you will vote for them when they promise to tax the rich and give handouts to you with your new, green job. The more people they get hooked on the government dole, the better for them.

I hear that, and I don't know too many professionals that are going to be able to trade jobs and start working outside on solar or wind turbines. I think we need to do better, but it will take a long time to get the country on green power due to limited infrastructure. We have hundred on millions of cars on the road and they will be on the road for a long time burning gas. Plus a change in administration and we are back at it. I think the current admin is going to help run the price of oil up and in turn help companies like Oxy for the next couple of years. Don't forget these people are politicians and they change about as much as the way the wind blows, and none of them can be trusted.
