Identity Promotions Not Wanted

I am a black woman at Cisco. I read the comments here about being “woke”, and I will tell you that the overwhelming majority people of color do not want or expect a promotion based on their race. We want promoted based on our merit.

Recently, there is one black woman get promoted from a front line manager with only a couple of years of manager experience to a director with one report. Most know this was done for diversity and not cause of merit. The VP needed diversity on her team.

It is situations like that many of you are frustrated with, as it is done with executives trying to be “woke” and showing they have diversity under them.

As a black woman I couldn’t agree more with you all. My ask of you all is that when you see people or color, please know that many of us want what you want, and we don’t want or expect promotions or take advantage of situations due to our color like the woman above.

@4yco+19PNxS8X Funny that they called YOU even though she took your name off the report.

That was gutsy and one for history.

Thank you for your candor. There are examples in many groups of this insulting promotion behavior that taints everyone.

Every director was mandated to sign up for the Multiplier Effect in which you have to sponsor a "full spectrum diverse" person to advocate for even though you might not know anything about them. Full spectrum diverse = opposite color/gender from you. You are expected to find someone within 30 days of taking the mandated pledge and start advocating on their behalf even though you have no insight into their performance.

Watching the SLT virtue signal its wokeness while the business struggles is really ridiculous. Can't the board find anyone that's more worried about delivering actual value to customers?

It's just a method to divide & distract employees. Have the wage slaves argue over diversity quotas while the SLT makes $15+ million/year.

Yes it happens all the time and Cisco isn’t afraid to admit it. Most of us have seen quotas for promoting women and most recently the announcement of an increase for promoting African Americans. Nobody mentions if they were the best choice for the job, that is irrelevant. Cudos to anyone in a category under focus, I would certain make use of it, but it should always be the best person for the job IMO regardless of s-x, color, age, etc. but that is a lost hope here.

It happens all the time. The next shift in the wind on which group is "offended" will see promotions or moves into specific job categories. I guarantee you that a far more qualified 50-something white male would be turned down from a position over a far less qualified person of color that could never do the job. I saw it happen far too many times in my career. All of them were not due to color of one's skin. It is what they knew about the person. Sleeping with a boss, knowing secrets about an exec, or many other things got them where they were. You sit and work with these people, see how little they do, and are constantly asked to help with their job. I told a woman no once. At the time I didn't realize she was the one that slept with an Exec and caused his divorce. 2 days later I get a call from an exec asking why I am not a team player. I wound up having to do her job, develop the presentation using her data, teach it all to her, and not have my name on it. Because she was so detached from reality, she had no clue what the data was and whether it was right. She took my name off the work, she presented it to the SLT, and the data was wrong. It caused such a massive downhill avalanche of brown stuff that management needed cases of Charmin to get off. I happily quit the company before she presented and laughed when I was called about it. I respectfully said I no longer work there and the data in the presentation was her data and they could look at the email chain to verify.

If you are responsible for data, understanding it, verifying accuracy, preparing it for Execs, and presenting to the SLT, you may want to verify said data. And who do you think got blamed for it? That's right me (no longer there) and her white manager. Not once was she even questioned on it and it was all hers. But, because of color and sleeping with a married Exec, she was teflon.

Wow, @3hlc hit the nail on the head... “inclusive recovery”, right out of the gate. Funny business

Kudos in expressing your desire to be recognized for your effort. Regardless, you will receive higher ratings numbers equating to $, promotion opportunities and RSUs that your colleagues will not. As they say, it is what it is. Over 20 + years I have been discriminated against due to gender and that certain country of origin staff stick together. In each case I inherited a less qualified manager that did not rise to the occasion. One can quit and go to a competitor or just accept it and continue to perform and work with some really good people. The CEO is investing much too much time the last six years in external social issues and the company financial performance has been impacted long before the pandemic came in.

"AA group"? Alcoholics Anonymous? Cisco is hiring recovering Alcoholics. I knew all ELT were drunks!

You'd be surprised how many people are related at Cisco. Don't even get me started on hiring family members as consultants.

"There is discrimination on many levels at Cisco. When only one person is interviewed for a role, or the manager knows they are going to hire a friend. Right now, the focus is in AA group"

Seen this more times than I could stand. Hence I left. I have zero desire to look back...

Cisco’s latest stupidity is coming in the next Pandemic update from our glorious leadership.

First item on the agenda is their plans for an “inclusive recovery”.

There is discrimination on many levels at Cisco. When only one person is interviewed for a role, or the manager knows they are going to hire a friend. Right now, the focus is in AA group. Next year, there will be some new socially important cause and that will be the next group that’s important. Cisco needs to be a work place and not a social and political playground

Wow I guess we can't have a discussion about race because any post that ask questions about race are deleted.

If you are black and clueless you deserve to be promoted as easily as someone who is white and clueless! That's the definition of diversity.

Good point on the concept of "meritocracy" .. true.. Merit is applicable when all things are equal not when some sections do not have any opportunities to even EARN that merit.
