Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Exit interview?

I can’t take it here anymore. The atmosphere here destroys me both physically and mentally. I was hoping to get laid off, I heard some rumors that they might do that soon but I realized I couldn’t wait any longer. I found a job in a company where the atmosphere should be a little better at least, if nothing else.

I’m interested in what an exit interview looks like? Will I have to go to an exit interview? I’d rather avoid it, because that too is just an extra stress, and I don’t believe I could use euphemisms to state the reasons I’m leaving.

Exit interview is a joke, it serves no purpose, but it makes some managers nervous and defensive !

A colleague of mine resigned from this company after being harrassed and bullied by his manager for many years. He had complained to HR , but as usual nothing happened except that office life became even more intolerable for him.

He looked for jobs outside 3M and found one. During his so called exit interview, his own manager, widely known in the group as a racist bully, showed up along with HR to make sure that the employee did not say anything negative about him while he left the company.

Exit interview along with your own manager .... come on !

They’ll just use the information to serve their own needs. Better to be quiet and save it for the press, that book you’ll write someday or social media....at least the information then gets out there, unfiltered and unedited. Congratulations on escaping, I’m right behind you and oh, do I have stories to tell, dating back decades.

Congratulations on finding something else. Whatever you do, don’t stress over this. I think 3M tries to set these up, but you can attend and say nothing as the other post said or just decline. My advice, show restraint and don’t say anything negative. Frankly, HR could not care less about what you say and it’s not like what you say will have any impact. I’ve heard of a few people at 3M use these sessions to lay into the company, managers, or leadership. They seem to feel satisfied for a minute, but I’m sure that feeling is short lived. they’ve accomplished nothing and maybe burned a bridge or tarnished their own reputation.

You don’t have to do one. Go ahead and ask any questions you may have about the separation now (I.e. retirement/savings accounts, insurance etc..) and decline the interview when offered. I was called into HR just a few minutes before walking out the door and just said “I have nothing to say, thank you for your time and the opportunity to work here” and left.

In my 3M experience, exit interviews are usually offered, but optional for the employee. I've only seen a couple people do them in my career. They are done by HR in my experience, so as a manager, I've never actually conducted one.

I'm with you too, the atmosphere has gotten so toxic that I'm leaving too. I'm just keeping the paycheck coming a couple more months until I get another, better, job.
