What's the general feelings about the new work that works policy?

not good - we will need less sites as a result. They are not doing this for employees, it's helping cut costs and boost sustainability numbers.
What's this- " virtual" speak ups? "Virtually" thrown under the bus? "Virtual" shivs in the back.
How is anyone ever going to be promoted?
"reducing real estate footprint" while not allowing location-free roles says the most about why they're doing this.

Nah, they don't care about whether or not they need to do the "walk of shame" when they lay someone off. The walk of shame doesn't cost them anything, but maintaining office space does. But you're right, they don't care about convenience to the employee. And they will always be somewhat conflicted between saving money on rent and their loss of direct supervision and control. But if you drilled into the info they provided, you already know that they're beginning to father and report on (supposedly anonymous but reported on a team basis) computer usage patterns.
Will just make it easier to lay people off. No physical tie to an office - the management will just request return the laptop. No “walk of shame” out the door when they can you. That is probably deeply implicit in their decision to implement that new work policy - not convenience to employees.
If I ain't getting a real desk in a real cube and have to schlep my own keyboard and mouse, they ain't seein' me ever again (except on Zoom of course).
