Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Is all this really legal ?

They say bottom 20% will be let go due to below standard performance ( all this started with the words Great workplace 2019 but held up due to pandemic )

But the truth is and always has been how much A$$ do you kiss to keep your job ? Are you friends with the store manager ? Market Manager ? even the Regional Mgr. ?

This site might be known to blow off steam etc. but so far over the last few years that I've visited this site is that the rumors are true. Xstore Mgr. posts ? Former Store Mgr. posts ? I seriously believe to be factual ! Because I was a store mgr. for this company as well for many years and was involved in these talks numerous amounts of times with Mkt. Mgrs. and regional's for the tier / PAR ratings of individuals.

During these succession meetings we would speak very candidly about individuals but always refrained from using politically incorrect terminology referencing individuals as OLD / LONG TERM / PAID TO MUCH / LAZY / TROUBLE MAKER because they upheld Sam's 3 basic beliefs with hesitation ! And the HR ( Human Resource Mgr.) was never invited to these meetings ? Wow

I was brain washed for years believing in this rhetoric until it hit me personally.

Wow you say !!!! some of you might say - "Just another disgruntled associate here we go again"

22 years of sacrifice to my family as a dedicated Walmart Manager that was ALL IN for life is what I say!

Just to leave this company and find out that the worth of my soul.
The worth of my beliefs ! Morals ! and values where so much greater than Walmart could have ever have taught me.

The corporate greed ! The racially PROFILING of individuals was most of Walmart taught me !

If your OLD ?
If you are long term ?
If you make to much $$ ?
If you don't kiss the manager and higher ups ?
You will eventually be fired from this company by a way that the will be worded as company progress for the future growth.

The stores now are under rated - their standards as a whole are HORRIBLE - standards that you see now are the new norm. Associates are not happy - they could care less to greet you - they want to go home but can't ! They have to pay bills!

walmart says to the public " WE GIVE THEM COVID BONUS - EXTRA $$ AN HOUR OF PAY" Hazardous pay ! BUT CUT THE NUMBER OF HOURS you work so it makes it less than you would take home on a regular 40 hour a week regular paying job ? SMH

Store Mgrs. @ walmart at an $80m a year in sales store make anywhere between $90k -$115k a year as a base salary ! with an added bonus of anywhere between 50% to 80% to %100 of their pay as an ADDED bonus of their yearly salary !
My first year as a store manager running an $80m year store in sales bonus was $80k DOLLARS !

This company is WORKING SHAMELESSLY off the backs of individuals that are on

  • food stamps
  • medicaid

DOWN RIGHT poverty conditions while this company Store mgr. and above live in a LAVISH type life style !

Somewhere there has to be a legal type scenario that calls this OUTRIGHT ILLEGAL ! \

i WILL follow this post for comments - in the hopes that there is some type of legal option associates could take because I would be willing to testify in the court of law of the harm I caused many of associates for MANY YEARS by being brain washed by this company for 22 of them !

It’s called rank and yank. Google it. GE used it for years and it created chaos in their company before they discontinued the practice. Amazon uses the practice as well.

At home office, once you hit 40, look out. Your days are numbered. It used to be that when you hit 20 years they looked to get rid of you. Now it’s 10-12 years.

Seriously. People at home office don’t get their badge updated anymore because they have differently designed badges for years of service and nobody wants to call attention to how long they’ve been there.

And if leadership doesn’t like you, you’re toast. Forget about it. Biggest bunch of yes men I’ve ever seen. And I don’t blame people one bit. People have children and bills to pay. And anymore it’s just a paycheck.

Why is there always this question 'is it legal'? Most of the retailers on here have the same type of post. Its a private company with it's own P&P and legal counsel. No, I'm sorry but an attorney isn't afraid of Walmart, you simply do not have any merit. Any organization is not going to place themselves in a legal situation that compromises the brand. Have there been class action suits in business's? Sure but research them and realize the scope of the suit. Every organization goes through changes. Such as position titles, quota balance or Job eliminations. Then offer severances to those that lost a position. What if your worked at Macy*s, Sax's or BestBuy. Look at what they have been through. If someone has direct reports (team) then no company is going to allow you to rate everyone 'exceeds' for example. First off it more then likely isn't true and if it was then all of them would and should be succession planned for your position within 6 months. Second that is simply not the way a business operates, not everyone is an A student. Like the post referencing Target and other business's. Age discrimination is a completely different topic, and the older a worker gets the more resistance there is to change, then feels 'picked on'. Trust me I know, worked retail for way to long, 25 plus and in the end I even heard myself saying ' why change it, or it was easier the old way'. If you are a salaried person I would follow the posters advice of banking as much as you can as well. It may not be personal, or even your work ethic but your title or position will one day be gone. In the end it's a business and change is constant.

I couldn't be sadder for SM and others who made 6 figure salaries for 20+ years and are now crying because they were runoff due to age or making to much money... When you KNEW the entire time of what YOU are now complaining about- "how bad Walmart treats ppl!" AND when YOU were part of the plan mistreating others now find yourselves "mistreated" - You were paid 100-200k per year knowing the game Walmart plays with its workers, age, ppl who make too much, etc. (You played right along) You should have retired at least a millionaire if you invested some of your HUGE salaries/bonuses instead of squandering it. I have zero sympathies for anyone here posting who was a part of the problem, wasted their money, knew what was obviously coming for them one day (Did it to others) and is now complaing about it.

So why doesn’t this type of board - go viral ? This is amazing to hear.

Walmart has the knowledge, power and the $$$ backing their name and will research and basically smother any wrong post complaint that you have.

But if the masses set up shop and unionized there would be better work place.

They have gotten rid of long timers. Right ? Or are getting rid of them.

They tell you never to be involved or speak to a union by the CBL’s you take as a manager. Right?

So why do t these comments make main stream media and cancel this worthless company ?

They don’t because on the legal side it’s the way things are done. Period.

But we talk about equality and all kids deserve a trophy nowadays.

If the union was brought into Walmart it would shape sh$$ up.

Great points! I was so disgusted by seeing the exhausted faces of some of our hardworking “heroes” outside of the picture perfect corporate stores that I was willing to risk a very comfortable, well paying job in tech. My boss was a big fan of paying Indian workers about the salary of a store manager, many of those Indian workers not only did not care about Walmart’s front line workers, but were even rude to them on a few support calls I was on. I am now broke, almost out of money for therapy. As if wrongful termination were not enough, they have a labor relations team to make your personal life hell as well. Fortunately, I do not have kids to feed so I am just living a much simpler life. But what if they had attempted to ruin a single moms life the way they did me (and they would)? Her kids would have no food to eat, unless of course, she returns to her local Walmart to enjoy the low prices that can only stay that low by threats and illegal actions. I tried the attorney route, but no one will take me seriously as they are all scared of Walmart. I do not find a lawsuit worth my time against the best lawyers on the planet, but I have to live in this world and Walmart sets the precedent for treatment of workers, so feel free to email. dmk0632@gmail.com

"Then came the written "coaching" for something entirely outside of my control. I knew I was on the chopping block and got out of Dodge before they had the satisfaction of terminating me. Yes, I know that I basically made it easier for them by doing to myself what they had already planned, but at least I did it on my terms and not on theirs. They knew I didn't deserve what was coming, and so did I. I let them know I knew what was coming and beat them to the punch by taking the initiative and moving on."

This 1000%. Seen it time and time again after 2+ decades. They couldn't find anything integrity wise so I was held accountable for things that we're beyond my control. Got tired of the constant senseless "investigations" of them trying to find something on me and all the signs were there so I resigned and left on my own terms. Honestly they did me a favor. Me & my family haven't step foot back in a Walmart. We're happier. My phone isn't going off 24/7 with texts, emails, phone calls. alarm notices, etc. Chuckled when Walmart didn't make their earnings report. Will chuckled again when Walmart is no longer the #1 Fortune 500 company.

The Home Office has gone to a burn and churn, aka forced rankings, aka the Hunger Games method for their evaluations.

Breaking it down, a certain % of associates are mandatorily ranked in the 5 groups of:

Needs improvement
Below expectations
Meets expectations
Exceeds expectations
Role model

regardless of actual performance. Performance no longer matters much.

Now, these are hypothetical percentages and I have no way to really know what they are, but:

15% are designated as needs improvement and will be termed;
10% will be below expectations and given a slim chance to improve; and
64% will be ranked as meets expectations.

These bottom 3 ranks will get no pay increase.

10% will be ranked above expectations and get some semblance of a pay raise while the remaining 1% get the promotions and higher pay raises.

This is how it works. I was witness to this at the Home Office. I saw associates of 20+ years with exceeds expectations or higher on every evaluation suddenly get a below expectations. How does an associate manage that after 20+ years in the Home Office? It's to get rid or people making too much money and/or to play favorites. Plus it encourages people to delude themselves into doing the job of three people for the bread crumbs the Home Office tosses them in the slimmest of hopes they can be in that top 11%.

Unfortunately this is common in retail as well as business as a whole. I was instructed to do the same thing at Target some years ago through the evaluation process and to get rid of the "blockers" who were the older as well as the higher paid team members. I balked at doing it, was threatened with my job, and left on my own terms and found employment elsewhere.

Sorry you drank the corporate Kool-Aid. I drank it too for a bit. However, when my friends were being walked out the door one-by-one in the Walmart company version of the walk of shame, I learned to recognize the signs of its approach. When my market manager made us rewrite performance evaluations because we had rated our staff too high I was smart enough to understand what he was really saying. When we were told our personal evaluations would not necessarily be based on the performance metrics of our individual clubs I was fully alert and woke to the methods this company uses to rid itself of long-termers and those who had dared to live long enough to manage to grow a bit older.

Finally, when I received the dreaded "Development Needed" rating on my annual evaluation despite being in the top 3 stores in the market overall and only a year after receiving an "Exceeds Expections" rating, I knew I needed to be looking for alternative employment. Then came the written "coaching" for something entirely outside of my control. I let them know I knew what was coming and beat them to the punch by taking the initiative and moving on.

Thank you for confirming the shady and disgusting methods that this corporation uses to screw their own people behind the scenes while publicly expressing only the "positive" things they are doing and all of the "good" they do for their employees and for the communities in which they operate.

Now, if you still have even a minutia of testicular material tucked inside your nutsack, take the time to express your regret to those whose lives you damaged while you were still under the influence of the corporate Kool-Aid. They will surely appreciate the gesture, even if a few still hold your personally responsible for the damage done to their psyche and financial lives.

I know I would love to hear as much from J Q, L* M, and T** K****. Though I'm not so naive as to believe that they would ever do so. However, I would absolutely love to tell them how much better my life is now that they are no longer a part of it.

I maintained my dignity and personal standards throughout my career at the Evil Empire. In the end, it probably cost me my job, but at least I still have my self-respect.
