Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Perspective is everything

to the post about 40 people not being a 'mass' layoff....perspective is everything...if you're in another country other than the US - then you're right - it's not a mass layoff.. While AIG may have 40K employees it has been downsizing since 2008 and it occurs year after year after year...its like a tourtours drip drip drip that has been pre-planned years ago. Cumulatively, for the US this 40 represents a mass layoff - AIG is trying to dodge reporting requirements by making a painful slow death of the US base.

@dvdp+19ufd7LA is 100% correct.

To the prior post, I agree. Getting RIF’d can be very positive for some - those who are prepared for it and are able to secure alternate employment quickly.

For some, though, it has and continues to be tough. Severance has run out. Job prospects aren’t materializing quickly enough.

It doesn’t matter how prepared you are, it’s still a jarring experience to be told that you’re no longer wanted or needed, regardless of how much you hate the place.

Agree with the prior comment with one exception. it doesn't always s— to get rif'ed at aig. i know several folks who were rif'ed, got severance for a very long time, transitioned to a new company while getting two paychecks and are in much better place today. in many cases an aig rif is a blessing so don't get too upset when the aig 200 downsize team comes calling for you. just smile and say thank God i'm out of here!

AIG has 25k employees in the US. For the 40 people impacted, it s—s. For their friends and co-workers, it s—s. But it’s not a “mass layoff”. It’s less than .01% of the headcount.

You’re not wrong. There were 35k employees in the US ten years ago. The 10k reduction is the result of multiple “transformation” and restructuring efforts - OE; Project A; Project B; PIP 1; PIP 2; Fresh Start; AIG 200.

Was it all preordained? No. Nobody in their right mind would logically have 7 different transformation programs in as many years. Each was a bigger failure than the one that preceded it
