I can no longer remember where I read about a new employee who was scheduled to be completely alone in the department at the time. I was shocked when I read it. Is that even possible? It’s probably a mistake, though nothing surprises me from Lowe’s anymore. Do you know if there have been any more of such cases?

Lowe’s will never make the necessary investments in training. Oh, they will give it lip service and come out with all kinds of “online training modules”, but any substantive amount of mentor-to-new hire, in-person training is not going to happen. If you’re not a self-starter and self-learner, you will not make it with this company.
I have lost count of how many times I have seen new hires first day be a weekend shift and with minimal supervision. The "Trial by Fire" comment is correct. It wouldn't be so bad if the desktop training you receive actually did anything to prepare you for what interactions with the public is like. The "red vest ready" mentoring system was meant to prepare new hires but I have seen it utilized inconsistently. You may find it a easier if you familiarize yourself of your departments layout/products (on your own time of course) before you face the public.
At Lowe's this is trial by fire. It has always been like this or at least the last 10 years
It happened at Sears.
