Although I’m safe for now, the atmosphere is quite tense and that’s why I’m constantly looking for new rumors or indications that there will be layoffs soon.

once BD decided that innovation was no longer a core value of the company, that acquisition is the path forward, layoffs will become part of the corporate model to profitability. Any new acquisition, even if it's not in an area where you work, will require a little off the top in other areas to balance those books. You no longer have value (forget innovation), you are a number (you cost the company money, and we already have 3 widgets in that area, we only need 2 widgets). Outdated job descriptions that cannot be easily changed will not help either. Just makes the slashing easier for somebody much higher up than you.
Spend your time getting as much training/experience as you can, don't spend time looking to see if there are rumors of a layoff, spend that time gaining experience, updating your resume, constantly networking, and always search for a job. It will make things go a lot smoother when the time comes.
No such thing as "safe" here at BD.
