Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Actively looking for a career outside oil and gas

I was not affected by the recent lay-offs. However, given that I am a minority and that there was a clear trend in the most recent lay-offs, with minority groups MOSTLY being affected, I am actively looking to get out from Imperial. In fact, I’m planning to change careers and transition out of oil and gas.
I believe oil and gas in general is a terrible industry that resists evolution.

Are you thinking the same?
Are you happy in oil and gas?

Stay positive and healthy everyone.

If Oil and Gas is terrible industry, then why you work here? Why you are not resigning? Have you worked other industries or Companies before? Or Imperial is the only place you have been working in Canada. Do you have any idea about manufacturing emission of EV batteries? It’s all about global politics.

Don’t mix Imperial mess with Oil industry. Yes, it’s a declining industry, however it will take time to complete replacement of fuel with alternatives. Some companies already have reduced their employee salaries to adapt current market. However, Imperial/Exxon policy is to send all work to overseas like BTC for cheap and low quality work without salary reduction. Eventually they will fire 35% of employees and will only keep Managers, Supervisors and coordinators. It’s stressful and health hazardous to continue work with Imperial right now with 3 times working loads. I know two persons on my same floor resigned two weeks ago due to stress. They knew that there is no future with Imperial. Why should they harm their health?

I think a lot of IOL managers have a great future outside the industry. Acting comes to mind.....whereve you play pretend all day.

I just recently put my resignation in and can honestly say, it's a breath of fresh air! Stay positive and know that there is life outside of O&G!

O&G is a declining industry, as it should be. Good luck with your pivot. I’m looking to do something more meaningful (and less harmful to the planet) with my life now too.
