Thread regarding Frontier Communications Corp. layoffs

Local 824 Picket

To all IBEW 824 members past and present,
Your bargaining committee, staff, and officers at the Union hall respectfully request your assistance in our effort to secure a fair contract now. Our plan is for an informational picket on the day of the Super Bowl to send a clear message to Frontier and their corporate partners like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Raymond James Stadium that taking away retirement benefits from our essential workers, including medical is simply not acceptable.
The plan is as follows :

  1. We will meet at the Union Hall located at 6603 E. Chelsea St Tampa 33610 between 930am and 10am on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7th.
  2. We will have chartered buses to shuttle us back and forth from the picket location throughout the day. If anyone doesn't want to ride the bus there is ample parking in and around Al Lopez Park.
  3. The picket location is Cancer Survivors' Plaza located at the corner of Dale Mabry Hwy and MLK.
  4. We have secured a permit through the City of Tampa and we have been in contact with the Tampa Police Department about pick up and drop off locations to ensure the safety of our members.
  5. Our goal is to have everyone back to the Union hall no later than 4pm so everyone can get home in time for the game.
  6. There is no tailgating allowed per the NFL and the NFL experience is along the Riverwalk far away from our location and it ends on Saturday, February 6th. We will try our best to limit any interaction with the public. We will do our best to practice social distancing and everyone will be required to wear a mask. If we are going to hold Frontier accountable for gutting healthcare during a pandemic then we must also hold ourselves accountable as well.
  7. There will also be an airplane flying over the stadium from 1pm to 5pm with a simple message " Frontier Fails Essential Workers IBEW824.org "
  8. Let's have a safe, fun event and demand a fair contract now from Frontier. If you have questions or need special accommodations please call the hall at 813-626-5136.

In solidarity,
Keith LaPlant
President IBEW LU 824

I’ve been a tech with Verizon/Frontier for 20 years. I used to have great insurance and it didn’t cost anything. All the union does is take things away from us and expect us to keep paying dues. I’m so sick of IBEW. They are all worthless and weak!

You should have left with you lump sum of 475,000 and risk the current job market. Now you won't see that amount in it's entirety.

I talked with a manager in the bathroom today and she told me unofficially that our picket hit the national news. 60 Minutes is considering doing a story on Frontier. Management is on serious damage control and they are willing to meet all of our demands now. Let’s hear it for solidarity!!!

which one of you union picketers felt it was a good idea to streak last. Tech, office worker, union officer, cable splicer and so on.. Exposed yourself as fat, slow/lazy. Picture perfect of a tech sitting in his van, CO, and office during his "career" at the phone company. Priceless.

200 "members" picketing AGAINST the company they work for..do you realize how that even sounds Cletus? Overcome with emotion? Then get your lazy self entitled self out there and join the people paying your salary. Union sheep dont even see the wool being pulled over their eyes or the wolf in sheeps clothing, pathetic. Nobody cares about union labor anymore and you are celebrating the very basic issue with it.

I drove by there earlier. What a scene. There must have been 2000 people picketing against Frontier. Everyone had their IBEW t-shirts and were singing in unison. I had to pull over as I became overwhelmed with emotion. We are Union Strong!!!

I would recommend dropping the word “fair” and just going with “contract now” on those signs because you people are in no position to demand anything from the company after how this union botched the last two years of negotiations. Keep paying your dues though s—ers!!

Difficult to comment on the 8 stupid points listed above, but I'll try, whose the loser that will be carrying the sign "No Corporate Greed", how about "We are essential workers", and "We are frontline workers", and finally ""We Demand A Contract Now!"

Ibew has had over two yrs to get a deal done, but settled for the safe option of 90 day notice. Nothing like waiting till the last min to screw us over. Still waiting on that cost of living raise.

So this announcement says “past” members can picket as well. Do they have to pay dues if they want to do this?

Well if union wants to organize us mgmt will picket and organize but on the day after while at the office doing obs and writing folks up. How does that sound?-Juan

If you did your job you wouldn't be writing people up. You're a typical FTR employee, basic english, can't do math, but at least you're getting paid. Congratulations!

who is the union kidding,. the company has us by the short hairs and you expect people to picket/strike over benefits for those who already retired.. news flash people arent going to strike over these issues. the employees are more worried/concerned over security/wages/insurance and 401k. anything other than this is a pipe dream in todays market. all companies are doing away with retirement medical benefits.. wake up Keith and company..

Wouldn’t you rather go to a super bowl party instead of wasting your time in a picket line? Yes you would. I’ve asked everyone on my team and no one is going to picket on Sunday. The union is trying to divide you from management. Don’t let them. We’ve made a decent offer to the union but they won’t even consider it because of their blatant greed. Do me a favor, don’t picket on Sunday because it just brings animosity. Enjoy the game instead.

How come they haven't mentioned Florida when they list the states that have received approvals or favorable determinations?

Can the union just fight for us to get a layoff with some money. Ftr being the 4th worst company to work for in the US. I’m sure there is a few of us who would take it.

Ask yourself, after all these months of idle are they really fighting for you?

the 8 points outlined are so stupid, now they're acting line they care about their members. Hmm if employees are laid off does that mean stewards and other union officials get laid off too. Less members should mean less stewards and officials. How much does that President get paid for how many months of inactivity? My guess 6 figures, just like their members, get paid for doing nothing.

I need everyone to remember that you represent Frontier when you will be picketing. We expect you to all be professional and not say anything derogatory about Frontier. We will be observing your behavior, so be careful. No one is taking away your right to protest, but just remember we are your employer and we control your future. Notice provided!

The techs are the reason we might lose our jobs. I wish they would just use contractors as techs, then our jobs would be safe.

Bunch of id–ts standing in a straight line waving a sign or walking in a circle saying rhymes. No one will be be paying attention. That sign on the plane should say "IBEW824 failed its workers." Glad my lumps sum check cleared. Feel bad for the young kids on the job that cared and thought this would be a good thing for them. I don't feel bad for the for the senior guys who should have left but were too lazy to call milliman and take their half million out. Too busy hanging in the CO, sleeping under a tree or reading the paper 3 times over

If only they could put this much energy into doing their jobs. Striking is going to prove a lot during a time where the most work is being allocated, contractors on stand by to save the day and do the work of the lazy union.
