Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

This Is IOL !

Here's a candid summary of my experience working with IOL as an EIT, until I was let go recently.

Good side - Got to work and learn from some fantastic people, who acted as a force multiplier and help compliment my capabilities and skills. Those people provided good technical mentorship, added great value and positivity to the work team, but are sadly in MINORITY. Also, completive pay scale and good learning opportunities if you are in technical track. Ergonomically very flexible and good benefits.

Bad side - This is going to be very long. The culture of this company S—S and is very toxic! Growth and survival here depends on who you are friends with, your brown-nosing and a** kissing skillset (should likely add it to PDS in future). Those who refuse to do it like me will eventually pay the price. "We will not retaliate for speaking up" is a complete BS and you will be booted out and punished if you speak up. The management wants YES men who will make them look good instead of highlighting real issues and speak up to them. There is very little room for honesty, dedication and integrity, so gotta be very politically adept to survive here.

The middle management is flooded with incompetent leaders, who are good for nothing and should be titled "Snakes". Working with incompetent, toxic, narcissistic bosses can make work and personal life miserable, and they are in abundance, infact its a qualification to be a team lead or supervisor in Imperial. Majority of the team leads and supervisors are focused solely on looking good in meetings, be good presentation jockeys to higher management, be manipulative, and contribute nothing credible. All sizzle, no smoke. The last team lead I worked with was useless, manipulative, steals credit for others work and is a TALKER. Also, visible difference in the way my supervisor treated people who were her favorites, someone of higher position compared to someone like me who was a recent hire. This is a White man and White ladies club and if you are a visible minority you'll likely struggle to be a good "Culture fit". This is a sinking ship and I wish this company the best.

As previously stated "Why would you hire someone in the first place if you are racist against that person"?

Does logic not apply here?

Yes the vast majority of the 100,000 laid off from oil and gas are whites.

As stated previously, as your buddy PM Blackface why it's okay for Imperial Oil to offshore jobs to India, while laying of as you put it "minorities"?
Why don't you go to CBC with this? I'm sure they will confront your boy PM Blackface with tough questions... right?

There is "The Truth" and "Your Truth", and I'm not going to entertain your Delusions and paranoia.

Stop watching CBC, CNN and MSNBC. They are FAKE NEWS!!!

@Lczu+18vofsNC I appreciate your POV but the message here is that visible minorities are considerably at a higher risk of being impacted despite being good performers. This happened during the recent staff reduction wherein many incompetent toxic slackers were retained simply because they were "Culture fits" and friends with the right people. It is impossible to expect everyone to fit a template which is naturally favorable to some. Did you check the normalizied weighted composition of the minorities in those 10000? I suggest you check it :)

Honestly, there are many amazing people and I agree with you that it is unfair to blame a group of people. But, it is equally important to listen to the voices of many people who have posted in this forum and the pattern they are seeing or experienced.

Oh give me a break!!! Too Much CBC, CNN, and MSNBS Propaganda. If it was so racist, you wouldn't have been hired in the first place.... right?

Over 100,000 have been laid off in the last few years from Oil & Gas. Are they mostly minorities?
Also IOL has been offshoring work the India. Why don't you call your buddy TruDope? See if he will help you out? He said he protects Canadian jobs, but that only applies to SNL Lavlalin Executives. Maybe if TruDope isn't too busy playing Black Face, he can help you out.

I've been laid off 3 times. I guess that White Privilege didn't help all that much. But don't let that stop you from scapegoating an entire race of people for your problems. There was a famous Germain who did the same thing in the 30's.

A vast majority of the heavy transactional accounting is performed at the GBC. The staff here at the Quarry Park GBC is simply performing "oversight" activities and creating work to justify their existence and above market compensation - including stock based compensation. Controllers management will fight tooth and nail to maintain current staffing levels by concocting a doomsday scenario to the gullible folks down south. Their own glorified status will stand hugely diminished if Controllers were right sized. Add to this the blatant discrimination propagated by the surviving clones in power of previous tyrants and you have no chance of career fulfillment or success in this toxic place.

Yeah, Controller's is very toxic, and the white guys at the top are cronies of the previous Controller's execs that have since retired.

They may occassionally put up posters of some CL 25/26 minorities, just to appear diverse. But I hope they know they will never go anywhere because of their skin tone.

Stay away from Controller's if you can.

I whole heartedly agree with the comment and observation about the manner in which the non-value added Finance group is managed. It appears that those leading make work projects such as promoting a paperless environment, sharepoint culture or simply coordinating (not teaching) learning sessions etc. are promoted to supervisory/ managerial positions. These types of activities are typically performed by admin. assistants at equivalent competitor functions at a fraction of the salary and benefits we dish out to these so called high flyers.

The moral of the story - if you want to become a supervisor or manager in Controllers don't get involved in technical matters or attempt to solve any problems. Simply push emails around and set up meetings till the problem is resolved and a solution found. Then shameleasly take full credit for the work. Also, never ever work a minute of overtime. Start your day at around 9.00 am and never work beyond 4.30pm.

You will appear "managerial" and make it to a select body of well paid id–ts. And don't forget to hold hand rails....

Been with the company for close to a decade and I agree with all the comments made in this forum regarding the culture and management. Was fortunate enough to survive the recent storm but pained to watch lot of good folks being impacted by this study. Know a few good folks in controls, a highly talented EIT in subsurface and another in research let go. Unless the management cleans the environment of the toxic team leads, stop punishing the whistleblowers and setting people up for failure, we'll continue to lose good folks, employee motivation and promote incompetence within leadership ranks.

I was an experienced hire and all of my previous working experiences were from Alberta. Fortunately, I worked and assessed under many knowledgeable leaders from other companies. Thus, I really didn't need to feel bad about my qualities and skills from IOL dumb Managers. Most of the Managers are not capable of assessing experienced and knowledgeable people under them. Most of the time they can't even assign right job to the right people and only just follow the order of their bosses. They are just Manager / Supervisors not leader (100% confident about that). You can't just promote 7/8 years experienced engineers as Supervisors only for their one quality and give some training and make them a leader right away (only making them an ignorant unqualified a– s—er manger). For good leadership skill, you need practice and experiences not just training. Most of the senior engineers / professionals are well aware about these dumb clowns unqualified supervisors / Managers. However, due to job vulnerability they keep shut their mouth.

Management don't appreciate if you complete the job on time based on your knowledge and experiences and keep your stakeholders happy. They only give credit if someone busy with cultural things, united ways, unnecessary events, incompetent coordination and volunteer in useless committee. They are blindly spending money on digitalization instead of understanding the long term goals. Management don't give a sh– about Company's asset. They insist you to do unnecessary trainings, MPI, BPR, cyber security, holding handrail type useless things. Most of the time employees are busy these types of useless staffs rather then doing the actual work. Management also like that as they dedicatedly want go to Houston or overseas. Thus, this place is good for jokers, actors/ actress or pretenders.

Some good experienced people are still there due to poor job market and for their long term pension plan. Unfortunately, they will be shocked within a year the way company is going and due to low oil price and Management greediness ( they won't reduce salary, only kick of people continuously next couple of months and years). People near to their retirement (1 yr or max 2 yrs) might be survived, However, I feel bad for people who are still 5 yrs / 10 yrs away from their retirement. They will loose most of their pension money (2 /3). My advice, look for job to other places and go. Yes, Imperial pay 5% more (it won't last long, wait and see) than other operators, however, they also make you work double (almost 55 hr or 60 hr) under useless managers. Honestly speaking, it's really tough to look for other jobs while working here as they will keep you so busy (always under staff). In addition, It will be painful if you have only Imperial / ExxonMobil experiences while looking for work with other companies. No Company really care if you hold handrail or talk by phone while walking or your phishing email checking ability type hilarious experiences.

The subject of blatant discrimination against visible minorities at Imperial has been raised many a times in this forum. The Finance function, in particular controllers, takes the lead in this area. Visible minorities are treated poorly in the rankings, not promoted and are more likely than non-visible minorities to be laid off. The company is more sensitive to gender equality and recently there have been a spate of promotions to managerial positions. Most of the beneficiaries of these elevated positions have been white females. Most surprisingly, these copy, paste, forward specialists have retained their jobs while several capable bodies in the business have been laid off. This situation does not bode well for the future of this company. Glad I don't work here anymore.
