Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

January 2021 Layoffs

  • Do you think that layoffs will continue in Jan 2021 as well?
  • If yes, who will be affected?
  • Are they planning to stop wiht layoffs?
  • Why are only layoffs considered - how about we consider other things to save money - for example reducing executive wages?
  • Are they planning to bring in better executive management so we do not have to layoff any more?
  • Are we going to start hiring at some point, people are overworked.
  • Is the worker ever going to be important to us anymore.
  • Do you have your priorities straight peeps?

The railroads have been laying off employees since 1945. That is when railroad jobs peaked.

The layoffs are going to continue until they hit their mark of 60%. I heard a rumor about the UP COO going to the NS a while back. I laughed at that one! The current management at the NS doesn't need help from an outside source to screw it up. They're doing a good job of it on their own. The outsourcing rumor really needs to be put to rest. Some outsourcing will be done, but not all. No other class 1 outsourced all their work to other companies. Mechanical outsourcing would be impossible to do if the contractors aren't on-site and ready to go at a moments notice. Then you have to think about the sheer amount of man-power needed for such outsourcing. I don't know of any company that does that kind of work with a lot people on hand. Then you'd have insurance requirements and equipment maintenance. Total outsourcing of the Mechanical dept. would be a very bad move. The mechanical dept have strict timelines to get the work in, and get the work out. Contractors are not always bound to those same timelines due to parts and equipment constraints. The contractors follow reasonable schedules to keep their employees happy and safe. Then there's also the hours of service limits that need to be considered as well for heavy equipment operators. I could go on further with this, but hopefully the point is made. No other RR completely outsourced ANY dept. in the monetary interest of PSR. It's too bad the NS is doing like this, but it was inevitable.

Layoffs will continue, and I still believe it will be from mechanical.

Get out now. I’m reminded of the words of ole Mike Farrell. If you don’t have 20 years in you will be on the street. If you do have 20 years in you will wish you were on the street.

Eventually conductors will be gone. Engineers will run trains alone and yards will be contracted out.
