Background, around 6 years as an employee, 10 years as a hatted contractor. Trades person. Im currently in an FLS role. Consistently Making 150k a year now (this can be much higher some years due to over time. potential for 200k years sometimes). I'm in a weird situation where I should be moving into an MPT role and going through the cycle. Obviously there's more money to be had, but after seeing how the cuts happen, and the cut throat culture within the MPT group.., what incentive is there to make the move? Any advice from current MPT folks? It seems the closer you are to the product in the ground, the safer you are. I guess its true what they say, higher the reward, higher the risk.

So there is always going to be the potential to be cut / laid off in MPT for performance or in this climate. I changed over from wage to MPT six years ago because I was disenfranchised by a supervisor and wanted some more say. I have more responsibility and there is a shrinking difference between what wage are paid and what I am as a supervisor. I still have had a lot of opportunities to do different stuff (expat trips, network member, actually working on some operational policies at a site, turnaround planning) but those options are drying up or seem to end up going to the same individuals again and again. If you want the authority and feel like the added responsibility is worth it you can pursue it. This process over the past four months has been nerve wracking knowing I am potentially in the cross hairs versus wage.
If you think one day you can be a plant super, then do it. If you want more responsibility to stay happy, then do it.
I’ve seen two wage guys eventually make exec levels (one was IOL), but both moved over when they were fairly early in their careers. Both were plant ops. May be more of them out there.
Wage has union protection - stick with wage. MPT, you get ranked every year, and great if the ranking is to your favor, otherwise it is very de-motivating.
Depends on your desire for career path. Also, an FLS. Was transitioned last year. Was my lowest year since being transitioned to FLS. If you are interested in a new job every couple years to make you a well rounded employee. MPT will give you that chance. If you want to stay put in your current work group stay WAGE.
